Wonderful, wonderful Lofoten!

Summer vacation 2016 continued…
Anne and I met our friends Anne-May and Jan at Skagen Hotel in Bodø on June 22. The next morning, we took the Bodø – Moskenes ferry. The 3,45 hour trip costed Anne and me NOK 1001 (approx. 120 USD). Karma (the dog) had to stay in the car, but she’s very comfortable there. We had hoped to arrive in Moskenes in brilliant weather, but was met with fog and rain.
Anne-May and Jan (on motorcycle) went to Å (yes, that’s actually a place name) while Anne and I went to the Moskenes tourist information to buy Lofoten maps. The plan was to meet up with Anne-May and Jan at our rented “Rorbu” in Kabelvåg in the afternoon.
Once the maps were in the bag (literally) we drove to Reine and had lunch. There’s no other place in Lofoten (and perhaps in Norway) more beautiful than Reine. No wonder this place is packed with tourists in the summer. But it seemed that the tourist season hadn’t really started in full yet, because it wasn’t really crowded. There was not a single soul at the cafeteria..
Back on the road, we used the maps and our eyes to find a mountain that we could hike with Karma. Yes, with mountains everywhere, you really have to SEARCH for a mountain you can take the dog to…
Finally, we found our mountain – Ryten on Flakstadøya island. The mountain had a gentle slope facing southeast and the map showed paths. Moreover, the weather was strongly improving! We took the Fredvang/Seljord exit and drove to Medvollen near Indresand.
From the parking, we followed the road to the nearest house, and then along a visible path towards the mountain. After passing a small hump we had the southeast slope ahead of us.
Shortly after starting on the main hillside, one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen, appeared on our left-hand side. The peaks Måltinden and Kjerringa rose steeply up from Kvalvika beach. We saw hikers coming up from that direction, so we guessed there was more than one way to get to Ryten.
Several hikers were enjoying this view 200 meters south of the summit. On the summit point, there were no one. Which was excellent, as I could then take my first Lofoten panorama picture without people in the way.
We were very uplifted. We had one Lofoten peak “in the bag”, the weather was turning great, and we hadn’t even checked in yet. On that note, it was time to get moving. We wanted some spend some time with our friends before the evening was over. We returned to the trailhead and drove in the direction of Kabelvåg, admiring numerous stunning peaks along the way.

Kabelvåg “downtown” was closed due to market day(s), but we quicky located the office where we had to pick up the key to the cabin. Shortly after, we checked into the cabin and our friends arrived at the same time.
