The local hiking committee Turstiprosjektet Myrvåg/Tjørvåg had decided to mark the route on the north side of lake Holmevatnet on Gurskøya. This was a logical extension to the network of marked trails that we had previously established.

Others in the committee had taken care of the pre-work (permissions from land owners, purchasing the sticks and painting the sticks) and me – being the foot soldier – were trusted the task to deploy the sticks. Which is a nice combination of fun and hard work. The hard part is of course to carry the sticks up the mountain. I have never weighed a backpack with 15 sticks and tools, but the backpack is quite heavy to lift…

On May 28, I headed out from Tuftene, went across Nonshornet and deployed the first 15 sticks from Holmevatnet and in the direction of Rjåhornet.

On May 29, I headed out from Leikongsætra and picked up where I left the day before. It was another super-hot day and while the ascent was strenuous, it was really nice to spend the afternoon and evening on the mountain – doing something useful for the community.

On May 30, I headed out from Leikongsætra again and completed  the route – approx. 45 sticks altogether. I then continued up to Sollia and returned along the south side of lake Holmevatnet – checking the other sticks. Some were loose. Sheep like to rub against them. We have not developed a sheep-proof way of getting the sticks to stay put…

I had to put up a couple of temporary signposts. They will be replaced by proper signposts sometime this autumn.

Only thing left to do now, is to email the map authorities so that the path gets on the map, updated our own maps which we deploy in the mailboxes on top of the mountains, etc. Office work. Not so fun as being outdoors…
