Leaving the Huldrehornet forest for a little while…

Huldrehornet (271m), Oct 8 2018
Monday: Rain today, but as the weather forecast was promising for the next days, this would be the last day in the Huldrehornet forest for a little while. I went out to mainly finish the last bridge.
But afterwards, we had of course to hike across Huldrehornet.

Nihusen (438m), Oct 10 2018
Wednesday: Ålesund day, and afterwards I drove out to Skodje to hike Nihusen via the west ridge, near Stette. I’ve hiked this route years ago, and as I didn’t remember anything from the hike, I looked forward to the revisit.
It was a nice and easy hike up the forest, along a visible path all the way.
I wouldn’t exactly call it a sunny day, but it least it wasn’t raining. And I got a chance to see exactly where the snow line was…
Karma and I eventually reached the top and had the usual rituals – treats for the dog, pictures for daddy.
The plan was all along a round trip hike, even if it meant a few kilometers along a paved road. I took the normal route down to Skodje – a route I’ve done many, many times.
Down by the main road, I had 2,3km ahead of me along the main road, until I reached the old road. Then, the car was only 1,6km away.
Despite the 3,9km along the roads, it was still a nice hike. And it felt really good to escape the Huldrehornskogen forest for a while…

Sollia (661m) , Oct 11 2018
Thursday: Beautiful weather, and 19,5 deg. C. at the Leikongsætra trailhead. Not the typical mid-October temperature!
We took the route on the east side of lake Holmevatnet – a route I normally *descend* from Sollia. I also wanted to check the sticks I put earlier in the season were still standing. And they were.
It was pretty late in the afternoon, and the sun had begun the “setting process”, which produced some wonderful colors and shades.
We returned the “normal” route, across point 598m, before joining our ascent route further down.
A beautiful day and a beautiful hike. The sun provided “fuel for the soul”…

Lidaveten (592m), Oct 12 2018
Friday: On my way to Sogndal, I decided to do the afternoon walk with Karma on Lidaveten in Volda. We started out from Steinnes, a route I had hiked once before.
The start of the route was quite familiar, but when we reached the forest, I found a felled area and the marked trail was nowhere to be seen. On a later hike, I was able to follow it *down*, but today, I could not see the sticks.
Which meant an off-trail hike through the chopped forest. Cumbersome!
Above this area, I was still not able to locate the path, so it continued to be an off-trail hike until I got high on the mountain.
Unfortunately, yesterday’s sunshine was nowhere to be seen, but the view from Lidaveten is always nice anyhow!
We returned the same way, and once back at the car, I sat course for Sogndal.

Skardsbøfjellet (700m), Oct 13 2018
Saturday: It was raining, and the higher mountains were not tempting. I suggested to Anne that we could do across Skardsbøfjellet, from Øvstedalen to Sogndal – 9,8km in total.
The part up to Skardsbøfjellet was asphalt road, hence not very exciting. But it’s all in the way you take it. If there is no evident fun, make some. Like test if the jacket is still waterproof, after 1,5 years. I guess it kind of was…
Skardsbøfjellet is the kind of place you pass by, very quickly…
From Skardsbøfjellet, we aimed for the forest road down to Skjeldestad. To get there, we had to pass Lomtjørni.
On our way to Skjeldestad, we stopped for a bite and were quite pleased by making almost a Norwegian mile in pouring rain.
Once back at Anne’s place in Sogndal, we took her car back to Øvstedalen so that I could pick up mine.

Trollhaug (408m), Oct 14 2018
Sunday: This was a hike in two parts; first we drove up Flyplassvegen (airport road) and parked in the first sharp left-hand curve. From here, we followed the trail towards Hasleggi.
Next followed a descent towards Eidsfjorden.
There, I gave Anne a small challenge that she didn’t particularly fancy, due to the slippery wood. But, she rose to the occasion…
Then we had lunch in a boathouse. We didn’t ask for permission…
From the fjord, we continued up a path until we reached the trail that runs parallel to RV5, aiming for Kjørnes where Anne’s car was awaiting.
Anne drove me back up to the airport road, to where road runs down to the Rud farm. Anne dropped us off, and headed back home. Karma and me would then hike back to the car, via Trollhaug – a small forest hump that I still hadn’t been to.
Along the way, we passed an “artificial” lake that wasn’t on the map.
Eventually, we reached the car, quite content about having done a nice hike on another rainy day.
