The surplus energy was emerging again and had to divide it between painting the house and developing a new route between Øyrahornet and Selsteinen on Gurskøya.

Trail maintenance in the Rambjøra forest

Monday: But the week started low on energy and I was more than happy just getting across the doorstep. I took my lopper to continue cleaning up the Rambjøra trail and didn’t even bother bringing the GPS – which says a lot!

Our route up and down Garnestua

Tuesday: My energy was better today and I decided to pay Garnestua a visit. It was a beautiful day and I chose Løset as my trailhead.

On our way to Garnestua

It was a hot day and Karma went for the comfort of the snow – which should NOT have been here at this time of the year. But it was a different year. In all sorts of ways…

Karma – cooling down

The sea fog was moving in. Nice to watch, and better to be above…

Today’s route

Thursday: It was finally time to start my biggest trail project this season – to develop a route between Øyrahornet and Selsteinen on Gurskøya. I did not look forward to the many and heavy loads that were awaiting, but I could picture the end result – which was motivating.

First, the sticks have to be carried more than 400m up to Øyrahornet

I chose to leave a gap between Øyrahornet and the first stick, so that Øyrahornet visitors wouldn’t think there was a new trail in place.

The first stick. Øyrahornet to the left.

I had 10 sticks which I placed on “Rumpene” – the humps between Øyrahornet and Slettheia. It was a super-hot day and I was so happy when my backpack was empty.

We continued up to Slettheia, so that I could plan where the trail should be. There was no existing path so I was at liberty to decide based on the terrain.

On Slettheia

From Slettheia, we went over to the north viewpoint, which is really awesome. I am considering recommending that we should mark this section too.

Afterwards, we descended into Øyradalen valley where a quick bath in the river was really tempting. The flies managed to ruin the experience, but…

Ahhhh….

Blåtind (697m), June 19 2020

Our route across Blåtind

Friday: The working week ended with a hike to Blåtind – the highest point on Hareidlandet island.

Blåtind ahead (summit not seen)

We followed the path up to lake Hundelaupvatnet where Karma could satisfy her thirst.

Lake Hundelaupvatnet

We then aimed for the snow – where I reckoned Karma would find more running water…

Heading for the summit

It was nice to be back. In normal circumstances, hiking Blåtind is a “no effort” activity, but given my new and mysterious health condition, it feels like a big win.

Karma on Blåtind

It was another hot day and Karma was in no hurry to leave the snow fields on top…

Take your time…

My place, June 20 2020

Two walls done. 3 to go…

Saturday: This day was dedicated in its entirety to painting the house. This would be my #1 summer activity, saving a CONSIDERABLE amount of money – as I considered outsourcing the job. The amount that the painter presented to me helped me find the necessary motivation to do the damned job myself.

Øyrahornet (417m), Slettheia (553m), June 21 2020

Today’s route

Sunday: Enough painting! Time to continue on my trail project. Fortunately, this Sunday wasn’t as hot as Thursday was. But the hill up to Øyrahornet looked just as steep!

Here we go – again…

But eventually, we reached Øyrahornet and from here it would be an easier hike to where we left off.

View from Øyrahornet

Once I got to work, I was really happy. There was a lot of work left, but I really liked the route.

I do like this route. Hope others will, too…

When the backpack was empty, we continued up to Slettheia and then down a route that I haven’t done before. We ended up in unfamiliar terrain and fog and for a little while I wondered where the heck we were.

OK? Is this lake Øyravatnet, or …?
