Saturday: Today, I decided to pay Koppefjellet a visit. The plan was to head out from Rotevassætra, but the road was closed. So, I had to continue to Krøvelsætra and do the route I did in June – for the first time.
The light was stunning today. I really looked forward to getting up on the mountain.
Eventually we reached Krøvelsætra and headed for the path that would take us to Rotevassætra.
The snowline was at approx. 800m.
At Rotevassætra, we found the forest path that would take us up the mountain.
I remembered this route quite well from last year. It is a nice path, marked and all…
This route also offers quite a view!
I truly appreciated the nice weather we’ve had for the past weeks. If it only could stay that way…
I could always delay start the skiing season. No problems!
When I arrived at the upper part of the mountain, I recalled the potential snow problem that you may run into here. If the snow is hard, this mountainside will require crampons. But today, there was enough snow-free spots, and we would be okay.
Just before we reached the top, I met two female hikers who seemed glad to see me. They came up the northeast ridge and wanted to descend the route I came up, but they didn’t know where to go. After sending them in the right direction, we continued up to the top.
The top offers quite alright views…
But now what? Should I attempt the northeast ridge? It’s darn steep and with snow, it would be a challenge going down. But OK, I decided to give it a try. But first, we had to get over to the northeast top.
After crossing the northeast top, the northeast ridge came into view. It didn’t look so bad from my viewpoint, but I knew very well how steep it is.
After descending 20 vertical meters, I decided to give up. I couldn’t safely guide the dog down with the snow and ice that we had to deal with. Going up here would have been much easier.
So, we went back up again, and the plan B was clear – descend the same route I did in June.
That route went parallel to our ascent route and then I would eventually rejoin the ascent route.
The light I mentioned earlier was really starting to present itself.
It was simply a beautiful afternoon, and I loved being up here.
I wanted a variation to my hike and 560m elev., I left the path and went off-trail until I was down at the meadow by the river.
From here, we had a nice walk on frozen ground back to Krøvelsætra.
The sunset later this evening wasn’t bad either…
Trip statistics: 7,8km, 735 vertical meters, 2h:21m
