A hike I had been thinking about for a long time…

Sunday: Anne began her Sunday like she’d done for a while now – going for a swim in Sogndalsfjøra. And lately, I’ve been picking her up. It’s nice to talk to people from time to time. Unfortunately, she didn’t feel up to coming along for a hike in the nice weather.
So, I took the dog and drove to Kjørnes to hike Hesteggi. I looked forward to a nice hike the beautiful forest.
Eventually, we reached snow. The upside was that there wasn’t a whole lot of it, so hiking was still easy.
I looked forward to getting to the Barsnesfjellet viewpoint. It offers a very nice view towards Sogndal.
Then we moved on towards the top, enjoying the view towards Sogndalsfjorden.
Based on previous experience, Hesteggi doesn’t seem to be a top where people go hiking in winter. But I saw a lot of footprints, which is probably because there wasn’t a lot of snow. A hike to Hesteggi in deeper snow can be … tedious.
When we reached the top, I wasn’t in the mood of returning the way we came. I checked with Anne if she could pick us up wherever we ended up, and she could.
Then I decided to just keep heading eastbound and see where we would end up.
Karma seemed both confused and happy about the 100% off-trail (she likes off-trail) route we now were on.
I could have been hiking ALL day up here, if I had wanted to. This is not the Hardangervidda plateau, but it would keep you busy for a full day, for sure…
After a while, I figured that I had to come up with a plan and decided to aim for Svartedalen and follow the mountain road down to Arnfinnstølen. The Coop store at Kaupanger seemed like a good place to end up. But first, I had to get down from the mountain I was on…
When we reached the Svartedalen road, I lost my lens cap and could not find it. Oh well, it comes with the “job”.
We followed the road down to Arnfinnstølen where I decided to follow paths I didn’t know existed or go off-trail if that let us keep the bearing towards Kaupanger.
It’s simply astounding how many paths there are in this forest!
Just before arriving at Kaupanger, I gave Anne a call. That was perfect timing, because just as we reached the store, Anne came.
Anne drove me back to Kjørnes where I picked up my car. On my way back to Sogndal, I just had to stop for one last picture for the day…
