Saturday: Time for a weekend up in the Romsdal region and yet another sleepover in the car. Man, was I looking forward to it!
The plan was to drive up Mittetdalen valley and do a roundtrip hike across Snarketinden and Rjuptindan. The following day (Sunday), I had my eyes set on Skrokkenfjellet.
I had a long drive ahead of me. At least 3,5 hours. Same time as to Sogndal.
When I got to Mittet, I drove up Mittetdalen and parked near the path to Hardskaret – the pass between Snarketinden and Skrokkenfjellet. This path was really vague, and I was a bit disappointed…
When we got out of the bush, we had to deal with meadows, and I thought to myself – this is going to be a long, long hike…
When we got up to Hardskaret, it was quite steep everywhere, but I could see a route up to my left which looked quite doable.
On our way up, I also got a good view towards Skrokkenfjellet. My plan wasn’t to go back to Hardskaret the day after, but it is always good to know how a mountain looks like, from different angles.
But the focus for the day was Snarketinden…
We had snow and we had water. Life was good!
At times, the ascent felt endless, but we were of course making progress…
And finally, we reached the top!
What a view!
Some views felt more “personal” than others. I still haven’t been to Store Venjetind…
It was time to move on. We still had two tops with prominence >= 100m to visit.
We passed across two minor tops – Blåfjellet (1080m) and Klauva (950m). The terrain was rocky (of course) but Karma was doing fine.
We now had the 3 Rjuptindan tops ahead of us.
Depending on the zoom level, there is at least two tops on the northwest side of the ridge – Rjuptinden (955m) and Dalefjellet (968m).
Upon closer zoom, Rjuptinden (or Fremre Rjuptinden) is 952,3m and there is also an unnamed top east of Skorgeklauva (942m). Which means that the Fremre Skaret pass towards Snarketinden has to be 852,3m for Fremre Rjuptinden to be a “legit” top.
According to the maps (norgeskart.no and hoydedata.no), the pass is – around 852,7m and as such – not really 100m prominence. But, it has been registered on peakbook.org with 100m prominence, so I might as well count it the same way…
Now, we only had Heimre Rjuptinden yet to do. The descent from Fremste Rjuptinden was … interesting!
Now, we only had an easy ascent ahead of us…
After an easy hike to the top, the tops were “in the bag” and we now just had to focus on the return route.
I decided to do a (near) direct descent from Heimre Rjuptinden, back to the trailhead – across Djupbotn.
The terrain was overall easy, but we had a lot of wet meadows to cross.
I was super-happy about the hike and looked forward to drive to the end of the road and settle in for the night.
There was only one problem. The upper parking offered a LOT of flies. And it was hot as hell…
I looked at the map for a plan B and found that I could hike Skrokkenfjellet from Langadalen – on the other side of the mountains we just had hiked.
So, then I drove down to Mittet, turned right towards Vistdal and drove up the long Langadalen toll road.
Eventually, we reached the parking at ~500m. This place looked great!
There were no flies, but there were a bunch of cows, showing us real interest!
After a while, they lost interest and resumed to their normal operations and we could enjoy a nice evening – all by ourselves…
Trip statistics: 13,9km, 1130 vertical meters, 4h:26m
