Gumpen (243m), June 25 2014
It was our 2nd day on Sanna island and we were still smiling after climbing Trænstaven the day before. Today, we would just take it easy and pay Gumpen a visit. At least that was the plan…
After breakfast, Bjørn Eirik, Anne, Karma and I followed “Kjærlighetsstien” (The love path) from our camp site.
In order to get to Gumpen, we had to walk through a tunnel below Breitinden and Mjåtinden.
On the other side of the tunnel, Gumpen came into view…
Taking pictures on top was forbidden (military area), but I figured it was OK to take pictures in other directions. Like – towards Kirkhelleren. We should definitely go there afterwards!
As for the high point – we were equally high as the high point, being outside the fence so we claimed the ascent with a good concience.
For descent, we found a path halfway between the two last bends before Gumpen. This path runs past Kjølen (177m) and I had to visit the top now that I was here. The others kept on going.
Eventually, we reached Kirkhelleren. Quite a place! No wonder this is a popular arena for concerts!
Afterwards, we stopped by Sanna Grendahus for coffee and waffles.

Nova (107m), Mjåtinden (296m), June 25 2014
After visiting Gumpen, Bjørn Eirik wanted to go kayaking and Anne took Karma for a walk on Sanna. I took the opportunity to see if I could get up Mjåtinden. I didn’t have any route information, but one thing was obvious – the ascent would have to be from the west side.
I followed “Kjærlighetsstien” for the 2nd time today and I decided that I should try to get up Nova.
10 years later, I have absolutely no recollection of this ascent. I was there for sure, I have both a GPS track and a picture of my GPS on top to prove it. What seems to be a tricky crux from a distance must seemingly not have been very difficult…
Seen from a distance, Mjåtinden looked difficult. A series of grassy ledges was the obvious route up, but then what? All I could do, was to give it a try…
I was filled with excitement when I had the west side of Mjåtinden ahead of me…
I felt small in this wild terrain…
I had to fight through high grass until I reached Øksendalsfjellet. Now, I could consentrate on the grassy ledges…
Higher up, I had to crawl under a rock in order to get to easier terrain.
When I got the top in view, a steep cliff was blocking the ridge route. I had a “oh no” second, until I realized it looked possible to bypass this cliff on the left side.
Shortly after, I was up! I was overjoyed. The others would absolutely have to visit this top too, and I couldn’t wait to guide them (the next day). As for Karma, I was confident that we would get her up too.
It was so cool to be standing almost 300m above Heimersand. I could see the tents, but I didn’t see Bjørn Eirik at sea and I didn’t see Anne and Karma.
I took the same route down and returned to Anne and Karma at the campsite. Anne looked forward to going up there the next day…
As Bjørn Eirik hadn’t returned yet, I went for another hike – this time to check out Breitinden.
10 years later, I don’t remember how high I got. I can’t seem to find the GPS track, but at some point I gave up – for most likely – a good reason.
No worries, though. The day was already great as it was…
