Tuesday: Ålesund day and a visit to another Orthopedist for a 2nd opinion on my knee. His words of comfort were a) the meniscus looks like crap, b) if I can sleep at night, surgery isn’t on the table and c) the pain is likely go away, soon or in the future. OK…
So, I decided to live my life like normal and decided to hike Sulafjellet after work. On my way to Sula island, I saw a massive white cloud above the Sunnmøre alps (it had to be a snow shower) and there were raindrops on my windshield. Add the wind to the equation, and I wasn’t really sure if this was a good idea. Still, I decided to take my chances.
I knew that Karma was quite reluctant the last time we started out from the Langevåg side, and I really wanted to start out from the Langevåg side, because we would have some shelter from the wind. So how could I get her going? I found a path that I didn’t think she knew about and that worked like a charm. She started walking, not knowing where this path would take her.
The plan was to hike to Koppen and pass around Rundehornet on the east side.
After a little while, she seemed to have lost her mojo and kept dragging her feet behind me. I called for a short break with a motivational speech. That seemed to do the trick.
On the mountain proper, she seemed to become interested again and took the lead.
The bonus for me was that I couldn’t remember ever doing this route on the upper mountain, and it turned out I hadn’t.
Two things motivated me now: 1) the wind wasn’t so bad and 2) now we were above Svanshornet (552m).
For sure, the weather was rougher in the Sunnmøre alps…
And when Karma found snow, she was alright…
Now we could head for the top, not having to worry about the weather or the wind.
Exactly one hour after heading out, we reached the top.
I did my usual round of pictures while Karma checked the ground 5 times for any treats she could have missed the first time.
I always enjoy the Ålesund view from this mountain.
Across Breisundet, I could see over to Skolma – which we hiked the day before.
Then we headed down – towards the cabin village.
I’ve seen in the news that a couple of cabins have burnt down, maybe from arsoning, but I couldn’t see the ruins. It feels as if there are way more cabins here now, compared to earlier. I don’t like this development. I guess it’s only a matter of time before they demand a mountain road for cars.
We had a rocky descent, but downhill is always easier than uphill.
On my way down, I was thinking – if I were to fall, that would probably not be good for the camera, hanging loose over my shoulder. 5 minutes later, my knee failed me and I fell. The first thing to touch the ground was my left hand. The second was the camera. The protective lens got bruises, but the camera was otherwise OK. Talk about jinxing things. I won’t ever have that thought again…
