Our hike across Brandbukampen

Friday: Basecamp Hov (Søndre Land) at our friends Eva & Bjørn’s place.

Our basecamp for a couple of days

Eva mentioned the day before that she always wanted to hike Brandbukampen, and after breakfast, we decided to take the trip.

We drove from Hov to Brandbu and parked by “Skihytta”. Normally, Easter and skiing goes hand in hand, but this year, you would have to go high into the mountains to enjoy skiing.

Into the forest

Karma and I had been to Brandbukampen a few years ago, but this would be a new mountain top for Anne, Eva and Bjørn. We all liked the forest path.

Enjoying a nice forest walk

Karma sees the camera and wonders if she should stand still or walk

When we got to the top, Eva was disappointed that there were no views. She had seen pictures from this top and had much higher expectations.

On Brandbukampen

On the true high point

We soon learned that there were views to be found – at the same place where the paragliders do their take-offs.

Now that the views were taken care of, we could focus on the local flora. Spring was definitely here.

We did a round-trip hike, and we got a scare close to the trailhead. Eva said Karma stopped to pee and she was surprised to find poo at the spot she had peed. The “poo” was a viper (“Hoggorm”) curled up. I am very thankful that the dog didn’t get bit.

Ouch, that was close…

Eidstangen (161m), Apr 18 2025

My hike to and from Eidstangen

Friday: After the hike to Brandbukampen, Anne wanted to take a quick dip in Randsfjorden – at Gurinestangen. I asked to be dropped off on the road to Eidstangen so that I could do a quick hike to the high point, and back.

Eidstangen, here I come… (Private road)

This was a typical “for the specially interested” walk. I didn’t want to walk through the farm and so I tried to find a way along the lake.

A nice afternoon by Randsfjorden

Looking back on Brandbukampen

As the water level was lower than usual, I was able to hike along the lake. It was fun!

Hiking along the lake

When I was close to the peninsula high point, I got to a farm field. The top was up to my right, but it seemed better to go around to the left, so I could truly walk the outskirts of the field. That was the wrong direction!

The high point is on the other side (sigh)

Potatoes already boiling?

Eventually I reached the high point and if I have forgotten this walk by tomorrow, it’s alright.

On the Eidstangen high point

I took the same route back and got picked up by the others. They were eager to get back to the house for coffee and something to eat. But I still hadn’t gotten my “dose” of 500 vertical meters

This route would have been harder with a higher water level

Trip statistics: 2,6km, 40 vertical meters, 0h:38m

Sjåheimen (610m), Apr 18 2025

My biking route across Sjåheimen

Friday: While Anne, Eva, Bjørn and Karma decided to spend the rest of the afternoon indoors, I took the bike to visit Sjåheimen. If I can’t ski there, I might as well bike there.

I biked from Skjeskroken above Hov, Søndre Land and aimed for Sagdammen. From there, I took a forest road towards the “Tyskervegen” road.

I need to go biking more often!

After following “Tyskervegen” for a while, I turned onto the road leading to the top. It was nice to be here, my first time on bike.

At Skihytta on Sjåheimen

This was my 2nd visit to a “Skihytte” today. The first was our starting point for Brandbukampen. No skiing or waffles for sale in either place…

My 11th visit to Sjåheimen

It was too early to return and so I decided to extend the trip by going to the Trevatna lakes.

Passing lake Skjeggom

Close to Trevatna, I made a bad decision to bike to Haraldsrud, thinking there was a forest road. I still had my ski-trip track from end of March in 2024 and so I didn’t see what was under the track – more precisely – the lack of a forest road.

In other words, last year, only 18 days earlier, we were skiing here!

So, halfway to Haraldsrud I had to turn around. There was hardly a path to follow. Too strenuous.

At the Trevatna lakes

From Trevatna, I returned to Skjeskroken via Brenna, Midtberg and Nordberg.

Returning to Hov, with Randsfjorden view

It was a really nice bike trip, and I also got some good vertical meters…
