Continued from summer vacation, day 16…
Tuesday: After a nice breakfast at hotel Wood in Bodø, we checked out and sat course for Brønnøysund. The plan was to hike Midtitinden (1058m) – the highest mountain in the Mjønestindan range – along the way. But the problem was the morning fog. Our plan B was Kvalhornet – a little further east. In the end, we decided to go for Kvalhornet.
We left RV80 in Nordvika and drove approx. 2km to the Kvalhornet trailhead. The day parking fee was NOK 63,25 (!) I don’t know. That’s what my Easypark app showed.
We followed a visible path up the forest. A family of 6 was ahead of us.
We soon caught up with the family, which had two young children. We did what we always do – find a way to boost the kids’ motivation. It’s always appreciated.
There was fog on the mountain, and we expected the worst, but hoped for the best.
We met two women, coming down the mountain. They had started early (fearing it would be a warm day) and didn’t see a thing up there. As we were chatting with them, the fog was breaking up. We recommended they should go back up, but they didn’t.
We moved on, rather confident about getting some nice views on top.
Looking back, it seemed like a major cloud system was moving in, and we tried to hike as fast as possible.
We reached the top – without fog – and were quite happy about it.
The view was somewhat limited – due to fog on higher mountains – but at least we could see mountains!
It was really nice to get a proper look at Sjunkhatten National Park, for the first time!
We were in no rush. The fog could come if it had too, we would find our way down anyway.
Eventually, it was time to leave the mountain. We passed the family of 6 further down. They seemed to be impressed with our pace, and we bragged back about the kids, and I think they appreciated my high-five.
It was very nice have visited Kvalhornet. We both enjoyed the hike!
Now, we were good and ready for the drive to Brønnøysund…
Near the trailhead, Anne wanted to cool down in the river (more of a creek today).
It looked tempting and I decided to take a bath too.
Afterwards, we continued to Brønnøysund. I was quite tired by the time we got there. It was a relatively long drive from Bodø – 471km.
Trip statistics: 10,2km, 945 vertical meters, 3h:22m
