Our route to Lusaskard

Saturday: I was very glad when Anne said yes to going for a ski-trip to Lusaskard. I’ve only been there 3 times in the past. Not sure why so few. Maybe it’s a little bit off the “normal grid”

We drove up to Mannsverk (Øvstedalen) and could ski directly from the car.

Heading out from Øvstedalen

The weather was OK and so was the snow.

Going up the steep car road

Relative to more frequently visited tops, Lusaskard is a bit remote. It’s not a quickie

Lusaskard comes into view

There amount of snow could have meant a very hard trip, but we found snowmobile tracks.

These tracks made our journey easier

We decided to stick to the tracks until they took us farther away from mountain.

The course is slightly off, but the tracks were convenient

After some time, we got to Furesete. From here, we followed the snowmobile tracks a bit up and then down the forest, leading us into Slettebotnen.

Approaching Furesete

Up from Furesete and down to Slettebotnen

From Slettebotnen, I thought we would have to create our own tracks, but we were lucky and found a pair of relatively fresh tracks.

Up from Slettebotnen

The snow at this elevation was just great and I looked forward to the descent.

It got windier, the higher we got. The light got worse and so did the snow.

On the mountain plateau

Coming down a short downhill, my skis got buried in the wind-affected snow and I fell flat on my face.

Anne stayed on her feet

When I thought we had reached the top, we hadn’t.

Almost up?

Sorry, Anne. This isn’t it…

But finally, the summit cairn came into view.

The summit ahead

I reached the top first. Anne arrived a couple of minutes later…

Anne, arriving on the summit

It was truly windy up there but we found shelter behind the cairn.

Yeah!

We had no need for spending more time there, than strictly necessary.

The Sognefjord

Panorama view from Lusaskard

We didn’t stay long and we followed our tracks down the upper mountain. I struggled to see clearly. The light was bad and my eyes were watery from the wind. I was happy when Anne took the lead. That gave me contrasts to relate to.

Descending Lusaskard

Rather than continuing down to Slettebotnen, we sat course for Furesete. That involved a couple of small valleys, and I didn’t remove my skins until I could see the cabins. From that point on, it would mainly be downhill.

Approaching Furesete

The snowmobile track was less friendly when going down, but every time the speed got too high for comfort, we could always branch out in the powder snow.

The road from lake Svartavatnet was tougher. The first part is incredibly steep, and I almost got cramps in both thighs from ploughing. And then I fell twice on the icy road. But we returned safe and sound back to the car!
