Another nice bicycle trip in the Kaupanger forest

Friday: Another day with rain showers and I didn’t have the inspiration to go to the higher mountains in Sogndal. Anne was still struggling with her Plantar fasciitis and didn’t want to walk a lot.
So, this was the perfect day to visit Storhaug – a very insignificant forest top by lake Breisetevatnet. It is just a hump, but it is a named hump! Which matters…
The plan was to bike from Dalåker to Breisete and hike the forest top along the way. The rain showers were close…
The rain caught up with us when we headed out, but it stopped raining quite soon and we could enjoy our bicycle trip…
It was nice to reach lake Breisetevatnet and see more than just trees.
A minute later, we were on our way (off-trail) up to Storhaug.
Anne was “on fire”. The Breisete Nature Reserve is protecting a largely untouched forest. Some of the pine and birch trees are more than 200 years old. This is an important habitat for wildlife, birds and insects.
It is indeed a beautiful forest, and the sunshine also helped a lot…
Then she noticed a Sitka spruce…
The Sitka spruce is an “intruder” from North America. It is popular for commercial reasons, but in protected areas, it is an invasive species. Removing Sitka spruce is therefore an important part of preserving the biodiversity of old-growth Norwegian forests.
While I applauded Anne’s efforts, I was more focused on finding the high point. Eventually, I landed on a spot and directed Anne up to it…
Next, we sat course for Breisete.
The tractor road had been resurfaced with huge chunks of crushed rock – great for drainage, but terrible for cycling. When we reached the hill from the lake, we chose to proceed on foot…
Breisete is a nice place. Back in the days – a traditional summer farm.
Now, we had passed 700m elevation and Storhaug was in clear view.
We then returned to my car at Dalåker. I handed the car keys over to Anne and continued biking down to the fjord at Kaupanger. Big fun and good speed!
Back at Anne’s place, I spent some time bringing in the wood that had been drying throughout the spring and summer…
In the evening, we enjoyed a nice rainbow.
