Rambjøra (132m), Oct 23 2023
Monday: The choice on rainy days is easy these days – trail maintenance in my local forest Rambjøra.
Today, the main focus was on the path from the top towards Dragsundflata. With the lopper, this looked like a never-ending task, but with the brush cutter, I see light at the end of the tunnel…

Garnestua (654m), Oct 24 2023
Tuesday: There isn’t much exercise in hanging around with daddy during trail maintenance, so we need a break where she can trim her engine. Today, that would happen on Garnestua, starting from Haddal.
Karma just loves this route. She saw a hare along this route years ago and she hasn’t forgotten it.
I loved that the rain had passed, and I enjoyed myself big time.
We have the usual rituals on this route and stopping for a view towards Ringstaddalen is one of them.
But then it was straight for the top…
I really enjoy the daylight during our afternoon walks, but I knew that we were only 14 days away from this becoming a real challenge. Already at the end of this week, we would have to turn the clock 1 hour back.
The winter I thought was on the way, during snowfall on Melshornet not too many days ago, seemed to be stuck somewhere. There was not much snow left in the mountains now.
I don’t mind at all. I don’t need winter along the coastline. Ørsta and Volda can have it and I can go there for skiing. Here, I like it just as it is now…
And then we were up!
Time to get back down!

Øyrahornet (417m), Oct 25 2023
Wednesday: Then it was time for more trail maintenance, but not in the Rambjøra forest this time. I was determined to get the Øyrahornet path in pristine order before the winter.
I left the brush cutter at the foot of the mountain and then we headed to the top.
On top, I really looked forward to getting back down and get going. I’ve said it before – I LOVE the brush cutter!
A little bit later, I could go to work.
I was able to finish with half the forest route before calling it a day.

Helgehornet (626m), Oct 26 2023
Thursday: This afternoon, I decided to go to Helgehornet from Eikreim, from where I have never hiked from before.
There is no parking at Eikreim, but I used one of my old strategies, which is to drive up to a house and pretend I’m a total stranger (well I am, technically. But I know the mountains as good as or better than the locals), set to hike their local mountain. I’ve seen folks that I suspect can a bit grumpy on a daily basis, become quite friendly when I ask about their local terrain. And at the end of the conversation, I ask for permission to park. No one has yet turned me down after a good talk.
Sometimes, one has to say the right things, like when they tell you: “we’re hunting now” – which basically means “get lost”. On which I reply “right now? Or within the next 2 hours?” That typically is never the case (as the hunt runs from September and throughout the year) and then there is no more talk about hunting…
Then we could get going…
I was hoping I could ascend faster than the sun was setting. That may be a stretch in October, but I gave it a good go…
There was a really long tractor road that ended just before a creek. At this creek, I made the wrong call and followed something I thought was the path up the mountain. I missed the path that would connect me to the path from the shooting range.
But it was totally OK. I didn’t mind heading (mostly off-trail) up this forest although I didn’t have a lot of daylight to go on.
Eventually, we joined the normal route and sat course for the top.
A little bit later, we reached the top, with plenty of daylight left.
What a glorious afternoon! I made sure to enjoy it a little bit extra, because soon enough, I would be back on Øyrahornet with the brush cutter.

The sun was setting behind the Vanylven mountains as we left, but there was still enough daylight for us to get back down before darkness.

Blåtind (697m), Oct 27 2023
Friday: Trail maintenance would just have to wait. The weather felt too good to spend it in the forest.
My lunchbreak was designated to Osnessanden beach in Ulsteinvik.
After work, I drove to Havåg to hike Blåtind – the highest top on Hareidlandet island. The forest looked so beautiful!
I really enjoyed being in the forest today. That doesn’t mean I got disappointed when we got above it…
In terms of daylight, I was kind of in a hurry today as well…
But there was enough of it (the sunshine) for now…
We kept a good pace and reached the top just as the final sun rays blessed the top of the mountain…
Happy dog, happy dad!
This is good living!
We hung around for a few minutes but as I hadn’t brought a headlamp, I figured we’d better get going.
Soon, it was “lights out”. In any case, a great hike!

Saturday: Anne came up last night and joined me today for another round of trail maintenance on the Øyrahornet route.
Like last time, I left the brush cutter in the forest and then we went for a hike to the top.
One can get used to this weather…

And then we were up…
I was a little concerned about Anne’s working morale…
But eventually, she came along.
The trail was in excellent condition now, and I was happy to announce it to the local community via Facebook.
In the evening, we went to Fosnavåg to enjoy a concert with Jan Eggum – an artist we both like.
