Sunday: Today, we decided to go to Vanylven and check out the new Sherpa stone steps that goes by the name of “Hakalletrappa”, that we had seen pictures of – On Facebook.
This is a route under development, but we figured that we would be able to proceed up to Kraksethornet, and subsequently – Nystøylhornet – the main goal for the day.
We found the parking between Bellen and Klovningen and there were the stone steps!
What to say? Quality work!
I love this concept, although I struggle to defend the many helicopter trips it takes. I guess this is a case of the eggs and the omelet…
That said, this is the northwest. It rains a lot. I wish for every community to have one hike (being stone steps or gravel) where you can walk to a top without walking in mud or in a creek that used to be known as a path.
It didn’t take long before we reached the top of the steps. I guess they will have good progress in 2024, but were we to turn around now, or proceed?
Stupid question…
The terrain ahead wasn’t directly friendly, and we had the steep Klovninghammaren cliff above us. We had to find a route around the cliff.
I mentioned it was a bit steep, right?
It turned out that the route we were going for was too steep higher up. We had to find a plan B. I let the girls wait while I traversed the mountainside and scouted for a way up. It didn’t take me too long to find one.
It was still steep, but now more of the strenuous kind…
The hike got really enjoyable when I was confident that we would be able to get up.
Now, we could focus on the nice views instead…
And soon, we were up on the Kraksethornet summit plateau. Well, at least me and Karma.
A little bit later, ALL of us were on Kraksethornet.
And then we moved on towards Nystøylhornet.
A couple of short stops were quite in order…
Just wonderful views!
And here’s another paradox – I like to look at wind turbines (although I like to call them “windmills” – sounds nicer), but I don’t like them being there. The turbines have their issues with birds getting killed and pollution (not only plastic), but the worst part is the area devastation for the access road(s).
But this wasn’t a day for aggravation…
It was cold on Nystøylhornet. There was a tiny spot that could offer some shelter and that spot was occupied…
And so we moved on…
…enjoying a new set of views…
The smart thing would be to stick to the path leading to Sandvikdalen…
But of course, we ended up off-trail.
The terrain was just awful and we solemnly swore that we would never repeat this descent route.
Once on the road in Sandvikdalen, we met a couple that we chatted with all the way back to the trailhead.
Thanks to my gals for a GREAT walk!
Trip statistics: 9,6km, 730 vertical meters, 3h:48m

What a great report on Hakalletrappa an d Nystøylhornet. Thank you so much. The Sherpa is coming back in early May for 10 weeks of work so we hope to get over Kragsethammeren and then it will get easier to get to the top from there…..
