Sunday: Finally – when I woke up, I felt almost normal. Whatever had been riddling my body for the past month – didn’t seem to be there anymore. Knock on wood and all that!
After breakfast, Anne wanted to see women’s 50km cross-country in the Olympics. As such, it was already afternoon when we sat course for Runde. A hike across this coastal island seemed to be a good choice for a day when the snow was bad (after rain and sub-zero temperatures) and the light was too flat for old folks like us.
But as Runde was Anne’s idea, I figured I could decide the route. So, my decision was to hike straight up from Goksøyr, hike across Varden and Rundebranden and return to Goksøyr via Raudtinden.
We had gone up this way before, but Anne couldn’t remember it.
Finally, we were on the ridge and could set course for the island high point.
The snow had an icy crust, and it was a little bit strenuous. I was a gentleman (of course) and made the track.
The good news was that there was much less snow on the other side of the island.
Soon, the high point was in the bag.
I took a round of pictures before we continued.
We followed the main path from Varden and there was less snow the lower we got.
Then we got on the ridge route on the west side. So much cool terrain to enjoy!
As we had noticed, there was hardly any snow on this side of the island.
On Frøystolen, we got company.
Frøystolen is a pile of rocks. Doesn’t feel like a safe place to hang around on…
Our next stop was Sandshornet.
Sandshornet feels like a safer spot.
Finally, we could set the course towards Rundebranden – the last top on this hike.
On Rundebranden, we figured we had earned a selfie…
With only downhill from here on, Anne was particularly happy…
Runde is a special island. It takes a lot of effort to have a boring hike here…
Returning to Goksøyr, we had our ascent route in plain view (center of picture)
It was a very nice hike. The forecast had promised rain and snow in the late afternoon (“sludd” in Norwegian) and the bad weather was moving in just as we left Runde.
Trip statistics: 7,7km, 605 vertical meters, 2h:57m
