My route around lake Reinsvatnet
My route around lake Reinsvatnet

Thursday: It was not a good morning. It was snowing and I had a terrible headache that I hadn’t seen coming. In fact, I was not feeling too well overall. Not sick, but the batteries were flat and I just wanted to sleep.

I got up for breakfast and then slept until noon. The headache was now under control and as the long trip we had planned wouldn’t take place today, I decided to take my skating skis for “a spin”. Anne was occupied with her books and so this would be a solo trip.

I didn’t have any plan, so I started skating the track on the north side of lake Reinsvatnet. The skis were “flying” and I really enjoyed myself. This was almost effortless, even with a rather strong wind against.

When I got Kriksfjell in view, I decided that if the tracks had been cleared, then I could go up there. But alas, the wind-transported snow made it impossible to skate up the forest.

So, I continued – expecting that I would be taking a parallel route back to Pellestova on Hafjell (where I started). But I really wanted to ski a little bit longer and so I continued to Reina. There, I would make my final decision.

Oops - did I leave the municipality?

At Reina, I decided to go for the “full tour” around the lake. Things went fine until I reached Blautmyra. I don’t know if the track along the lake had been prepared at all today, but skating was very difficult due to the amount of snow that was covering the track. The cross-country people were OK. I was not.

Eventually, I was back at the hotel and had to hit the bed. This trip did me mentally good, but whatever was bugging me before the trip, had only accelerated.

1,5 hour later, I was restless and decided to go for one more skating trip, but a much shorter one. I followed a route in the direction of Mosætra, but as I didn’t know if there was another route back to Pellestova, I decided to ski up to Hafjelltoppen instead.

5 visits to Hafjelltoppen in 5 days is more than enough. I skied back to the hotel and rested some more. The body felt like it was in total shutdown now. And if it hadn’t been for a) being so hungry and b) Anne would surely expect my company, I would probably have skipped dinner. Just getting out of bed and take a shower was so hard.

For the first time during our stay, we ordered starters in the hotel restaurant. I got a quiche and salad that was not memorable. Anne was happy with hers. I called it the “one-bite thing”.

Sure you can handle the main course after this?
Sure you can handle the main course after this?

The main course was much more enjoyable, especially since I had ordered an extra bowl of potatoes on the side. The main courses were not generous, when you have been out skiing all day. Not that I had done that, but surely many others had.

In any case, our (expensive) stay at Pellestova was a nice experience. We enjoyed ourselves and the staff were friendly and helpful. And there is something extra about being able to (almost) go skiing from your hotel room. The weather could have been better, but on the other hand, it could have been worse. Much worse. We will think back on this stay with fond memories.
