My skiing route to Sjåheimen
My skiing route to Sjåheimen

Saturday: We were now in Hov, Søndre Land and we woke up to 12-15cm of fresh snow, and I immediately skipped the plan about going hiking. It would surely be doable, but it wouldn’t be fun.

We did NOT see this coming...

After a shopping for groceries in Hov, I decided that I wanted to see if I could ski to “Skihytta” on Sjåheimen. It’s tradition to ski there if there is enough snow.

Anne advised me to follow “Tyskervegen” and then the forest road to “Skihytta”, opposed to follow the normal skiing routes. That felt like a good suggestion, and off I went…

A fun experiment...

In the beginning, it was all good. I followed a pair of car tracks and the skis were gliding well.

But then the car returned, and I could no longer follow the tracks in most places. But, there was overall enough snow for skiing without having to worry about the skis.

Arrgh!

Eventually, I reached the forest road that would take me up to the top.

It was only 2,6km to the top, but the forest road felt “endless”.

There was no point in looking forward to the descent, because the skis (with built-in skins – now wet) would not go very fast down this moderately steep hill.

Finally, I reached the top.

Maybe, just maybe I was the only person to reach the top on skis in the Easter week.

My return was in the nick of time. There was still enough snow, but if I had gone one hour later, I don’t think I could have been skiing the car road.

Better hurry...

In the evening, Eva & Bjørn invited us to a delicious dinner, and it was very nice to see Elisabeth again also. Good friends are forever!

Our skiing route to Sjåheimen
Our skiing route to Sjåheimen

Sunday: Yesterday’s dump of snow melted during the day, but another wave came in this morning. I quickly saw the opportunity for taking another ski-trip to Sjåheimen and this time, I got Anne to come along.

It was snowing when we started, but it stopped after a while and we had a quite nice trip through the forest.

I was a bit baffled about us being the only ones out skiing – in this otherwise popular area. Maybe folks just don’t go out if the tracks haven’t been prepped?

The snow was quite sticky in the beginning, but it got gradually better.

I had now been skiing for 8 days in a row, since we left Sogndal last Sunday. I had used my mountain skis, cross-country skis and skating skis, but I still hadn’t tested my Randonée skis. It’s not big deal if I return home without having used them, as they are my default skis on Sunnmøre.

It would have been nice if “Skihytta” was open and selling waffles and hot drinks. But it was nice being here anyway.

Happy days!

It was time to return to our “basecamp”. Our hosts Eva and Bjørn were serving hamburgers and we were 7 adults and 4 young children digging in…
