Saturday: I had a really bad night and didn’t fall asleep until the morning hours. I woke up 2 hours later with a strong headache. I dragged myself out of bed around 9:30 and made breakfast for me and Anne. Afterwards, we enjoyed the men’s 50km cross-country (classic) in the Olympics. Norway took its 18th gold medal and medal #40. An amazing feat by a small nation.
Then I asked Anne what she wanted to do, and she wanted to go cross-country skiing on the Leikongeidet course. I didn’t, but I figured I could do yet another trip up to Røddalshorn (it’s the same trailhead) and join her for a final lap when I got back down.
The weather was wonderful and more snow had fallen during the night. This could be quite good!
There were 4 skiers ahead of me and I was catching up with them – fast! Hence, I reckoned I had to plough the trail today as well, but someone else had been up there earlier in the day.
I could see massive snow shower building up. I sincerely hoped it would stay out there until I was back down.
And then I was up and did my take on a selfie…
I really looked forward to the descent, now that I had seen how good the snow was. It was a bit wet, but it hadn’t frozen yet. So, cutting through it would not be a problem.
The group of 4 came up just as I was leaving. They had talked about descending the east ridge. I considered it too but concluded that it would be safer to stick to the terrain that I was familiar with, from skiing here for the past 3 days.
I had a fantastic descent. Clearly the best I had on this mountain, this week. When I got back down to the car, I just wanted to go back up. What a paradox – feeling like a total wreck in the morning and now wanting to go up the mountain one more time. Don’t underestimate what the blood pump can do with a body…
Anne arrived at the car just as I got there. She had done a couple of laps and decided to join me for one more.
I switched to my CC skis (with built-in skins) and off we went.
Then she disappeared. Maybe she stopped to talk to someone, and I continued on my own. I met her on my way back. She would finish the lap while I continued back to the car.
We left Leikongeidet in excellent weather. 1 minute later, we drove into the snow shower that had been lurking since we started skiing. It wasn’t a major one, but it was clear that there would be scattered snow showers (and maybe rain) the rest of the day.
Trip statistics: 7km, 495 vertical meters, 1h:36m
