Tuesday: It was snowing (and melting) all day long, but the snowline in the local mountains was gradually creeping down. The forecast for the afternoon was confusing. I wanted to go hiking on Nerlandsøya, giving me a good view towards heaps of mountains, but I didn’t want to get stuck out there with summer tyres on snowy roads.
That would probably not happen, and so I took the drive. I parked before the new bridge, just to bike across it and get GPX tracks to show for it.
There was absolutely a good chance that I would have a close encounter with a snow shower this afternoon…
I biked up to 215m, where the mountain path begins. There was snow all the way to the top, but not a lot.
During my bike trip, a helicopter (carrying suspending load) flew back and forth between Fosnavåg and the mountain. I was a bit curious about what they were transporting.
The helicopter returned again, but this time without a load. I quickly understood what was going on and that the last trip was to pick up someone.
Clearly, this path is about to get a facelift…
I never felt that this path was in a need of an upgrade, but I’m sure the end result will be awesome. Some enthusiasts are in for a busy summer. This is hard work!
I was keeping an eye out on the weather. So far, so good…
A couple of wooden walkways were also new, since I was here the last time. Someone really wants us to reach the top without getting our boots muddy!
I’m not being sarcastic. I’ve spent hundreds of hours on trail maintenance myself, which also included wooden walkways. But my local group has never seen the need for flying in stones…
Eventually, I reached the top…
… and could enjoy the views I had been looking forward to…
It seemed that I would be in the clear for a little longer, but I should not push my luck…
The sun was shining on my way down and everything was just beautiful!
I decided to pay Teigetua a visit, once I returned to my bike.
It was nice to be outdoors, and it was good to see that there wasn’t a whole lot of snow at 400m elevation. This will quickly melt away.
Time to go home…
On my way back to the car, I went across the old bridge. It’s not often you get to visit an island on bike via two different bridges. It’s a first for me, for sure.
Trip statistics: 7,7km on bike, 3km on foot, 540 vertical meters, 1h:46m
