My hike-and-bike route on Nerlandsøya
My hike-and-bike route on Nerlandsøya

Friday: I considered going skiing this afternoon, but I was a bit reluctant to the long drive. Then it turned to overcast and I decided to go hiking on Nerlandsøya instead.

The plan was to do the “classic” route from Mulevika to Terneneset, up to Rjåhornet and then to Storevarden. But the twist this time that I would have my bike awaiting at Kvalsund. Which meant a 6km+ bike trip back to Mulevika.

The terrain from Mulevika is fun and you can have a good time as you possibly want.

You can hike, jump and scramble...

Most of this route is easy terrain, although some basic route-finding is necessary.

This place is cool when the waves are high. Which they weren’t now…

But then it gets a bit trickier

Hmm... It's really slippery down there

If you don’t consider it safe to follow the shore (can be done on low tide), look up and find a grassy route that takes you up to a small “crux” where you have to be a little careful.

I’ve even brought Karma along on this route…

Don’t worry, it’s not difficult to get down on the other side.

Looking back on this section, it isn’t obvious where to pass in a safe way…

Now, I had a ridge to scramble. I stuck to the ridge crest all the way up and the scrambling was fun, but not very difficult.

It was way easier than back in 2020…

I realized that when I have done this route in the past, I’ve always gone directly to Storevarden. This time, I would stop by Rjåhornet and that would be new tracks for my GPS map!

I was in the mood for more scrambling and picked the hardest route I thought I was capable of doing.

I enjoyed myself a lot!

Then I moved on towards Storevarden.

After a short stay on top, I descended towards Kvalsund. All of a sudden, I decided that I would like to enjoy a couple of beers this evening. But I didn’t have any and as Norwegian stores stop selling beer at 8pm, I assumed I would have to enjoy non-alcoholic beer instead.

But when I reached the Teigetua road, the time was 7pm, I had only 1,1km to go, and I thought I had plenty of time. But then I realized that it wasn’t my car waiting at the end of the road, it was my bike!

When I reached the bike, the time was 7:10pm. I had 6km+ back to the car, and then I had to drive from Mulevika to Fosnavåg, get the beer and pay for it before 8pm. Could I do that in 50 minutes?

I enjoy these challenges and biked as hard as I could. I biked the 6,1km in 19 minutes and I walked out of the store in Fosnavåg at 7:50pm with the beer in my hand.

It was a most excellent afternoon!

Trip statistics: 8km on foot, 6,1km on bike, 755 vertical meters, 2h:58m
