Laupsnipa (562m), Feb 23 2026
Monday: The week didn’t start with a good night’s sleep. I got 3 OK hours, the rest of the night ranged from eyes wide open to dozing.
But, besides being tired, I felt quite OK once I got up. The workday was good and as it had been raining all day so far, I just settled for hiking Huldrehornet a couple of time, so I could start the week with 500 vertical meters.
But once I got in the car, it stopped raining and I decided to hike Laupsnipa. The fog was thick, but one could always hope for it to lift, preferably just when I reached the top…
I had been skiing Røddalshorn 4 times in the past week, so the amount of snow shouldn’t have come as a surprise to me. But I thought more snow had melted with warmer temperatures and lots of rain. But the amount of snow left was quite significant and I realized that this would be a very hard hike.
The solution to the problem: one foot in front of the other.
It took me 1h:13m to ascend the 550 vertical meters. This hike takes at most 40 minutes without snow. It was very, very strenuous and I was a happy dude when I finally reached the top.
And wouldn’t you know – right there and then – the fog begun to lift!
Anne (still visiting) was probably wondering what I was on about, so I tried to increase the pace on my way down.
38 minutes later, I was back at the car. It was a brutal start to the week, but the good news was my body felt just fine. I could not have pulled off this hike last week.

Skafjellet (579m), Feb 24 2026
Tuesday: Enough snow for skiing, but the snow was soggy and it didn’t tempt me. I chose to go for a hike instead. But where? I checked with a contact in Haddal. He didn’t know of any “open” trails. But I figured that there was a good chance that there could be a track from Geilane to Skafjellet. I decided to go and see.
I wasn’t able to park near the trailhead but found parking 300m up the road. To my delight, I found a very nice track up the tractor road. And since there was a snowshoe track up “Mjølkeråsa”, I was quite happy. The tractor road is utterly boring.
The plod up the mountain was enjoyable, listening to a good podcast. Finally, the summit cairn came into view, and I had to smile about the daring hikers who had taken a direct shortcut…
It was only 12 days since I was here the last time, and ideally, I wanted to be on a top I hadn’t visited so far this year. But I didn’t want to “kill” myself in the process. I was very happy about the track.
The weather wasn’t stunning, but as long as it wasn’t raining or snowing, there was absolutely no reason to complain.
I took the same route back down.

Øyrahornet (417m), Feb 25 2026
Wednesday: Crap weather. Rain all day. As I was already 100 vertical meters ahead of my weekly goal, I decided to settle for a 400 vertical meter hike and Øyrahornet was a good candidate.
I started out from Øyrahaugen and when I reached the river, I was in total disbelief. I had never seen so much water in this river before, and I’ve been to this top almost 100 times.
And for the very first time, part of the path was unhikeable. I had to take a detour via the forest.
The river was just crazy. The snowmelt was amazing!
The hike up the mountain was wet. Below all the snow was just slush.
I was soaking wet when I reached the top, but it was OK. It was just water. There was no wind and I was not cold. I just looked forward to getting back home and take a warm shower.
Trip statistics: 3,3km, 410 vertical meters, 1h:13m
Hasundhornet (533m), Feb 26 2026
Thursday: The weather was still poor, but it didn’t rain as much as the day before. I decided that I would “go get” my 500 vertical meters, and that’s it. The choice fell on Hasundhornet from Garsholhaugen – a route that was almost free of snow – but not ice.
I put on a podcast and put one foot in front of the other. There was ice on the path here and there, but not enough to warrant ice cleats.
Winter was definitely over for now. At least along the coastline. I guess I can still go skiing in the Ørsta/Volda region.
Reaching the top had only “earned” me 475 vertical meters, so I descended a bit in the direction of Fjelle, before I returned to the top. I feel a little crazy about these things, but I can live with it just fine…
Trip statistics: 4,2km, 510 vertical meters, 1h:37m
Huldrehornet (271m), Feb 27 2026
Friday: Another day of rain, but there was supposed to be a break around 5pm. I was not inspired at all and decided to get my daily “dose” of 500 vertical meters on Huldrehornet and that’s it.
I listened for the podcast “Skiklubben» (the ski club) for the first time. Quite interesting. I miss training. I did a whole lot of it 10 years ago, but since then – only hiking, skiing and biking.
Maybe I am being a bit unfair to myself. I am not too far away from anaerobic threshold when I’m hiking and feeling energized. And when I bike around my local island, I often try to set a new personal record. So, to say I’m not training is maybe inaccurate. But I’m not running any longer. The energy surplus doesn’t seem to be around anymore.
Maybe at my age (62), the daily 500 vertical meters (in a good pace) every single day doesn’t give me the surplus I need to go running any more. Don’t know. Or maybe it’s because I don’t do any stretching and just feel too stiff.
After hiking up and down Huldrehornet once, I decided to take another route to the top.
This path was quite icy down in the forest.
I was glad when I reached the top for the second time and could head back home and rest. The energy level was rock bottom and now I could feel some light hail.
But I got the “job” done!
