My hike up and down Stedjeåsen
My hike up and down Stedjeåsen

Monday: I felt like crap my entire working day. Not a good start to the week. Based on the symptoms, I decided to go ahead with the course of antibiotics.

After work, I was really tired and just wanted to sleep but decided to go for a hike up to Stedjeåsen. One can argue how clever that was, but I can’t help how I’m wired.

Normally, things get better once the blood pump starts working. Today was no exception.

I was hiking quite slowly, due to an incredibly icy trail.

The weather was still great, and so it seems to be for the next 10 days. It’s just insane to think about having almost only nice weather since December 20th. Almost 1,5 months of good weather, in mid-winter.

There were no off-trail “adventures” today. I stuck to the main trail all the way, except for the off-trail pitch to the top that I think only I bothers to visit.

On my way down, I stopped by a new “viewpoint”, created by the storm “Amy” back in October 2025. I had to climb and balance on a stack of fallen trees and find a way to balance the camera on a log, for a long exposure picture.

Back at Anne’s place, I chopped and stabled wood for an hour.

Tuesday: As for the shape and form, this was a slightly better day than the day before and I felt a bit more motivated for hiking after work. I decided to drive to Kaupanger to hike Amlaholten. It’s an easy way to get 500 vertical meters…

It was yet another nice and cold afternoon…

I really like this forest. I could wish for a better viewpoint, but we appreciate what we get.

I took an off-trail route down that I hadn’t done before. I always enjoy getting new tracks for my GPS map.

I could have spent some time taking more pictures down by the fjord, but it was just too cold.

I stopped in Sogndal for only one picture, then I drove back to Anne’s place and spent 1,5 hours chopping and stabling wood.

Wednesday: Feeling better day by day. The antibiotics seem to do its thing. That, and a beautiful red sky gave me a good start to the day.

I was very happy when Anne decided to join me for the afternoon hike to Skjeggen. We parked at Røvhaugane (110m) and as expected – the path was icy.

The ice cleats got an OK grip as long as it wasn’t too steep.

What a path!

But there was one part of the route where we took a detour. None of us wanted to slide down this river of ice…

Passing Kjørrdalen, Anne launched the idea about renting it for a night. It’s rentable. That sounded nice. Let’s do that.

And then we were up. I decided I wanted to take a picture of us both, and for some reason, I couldn’t stand still for 0,6 seconds!

None of us remembered when Sogndal got its last precipitation, but it was probably a month ago. Still, the snow was of pure powder quality. You could almost blow it away…

It was getting darker, and the big question was if we could get back to the car without using the headlamps.

On our way down, I ordered Anne to climb up in a tree. I do these things to help her stay young 😉

When we got to Røvhaugane, it was quite dark, but we made it all the way to the car without the aid of headlamps.

Friday: I went to bed 8:30pm (!) last night, and at 5am this morning, I couldn’t sleep any longer. I enjoyed a long breakfast and logged onto work 6am.

As such, I could log off with a good conscience at before 3pm and go for a hike to Hesteggi. Anne had still not returned from her 2-day work trip.

I started out from Tjødnali (Kjørnes) and as suspected – the path up the forest was quite icy.

I didn’t stop for further pictures until I got to Loftesnesfjellet.

800 vertical meters after a long day was perhaps a bit over the top. The hike up the forest didn’t come for free, but it got easier with a few good podcasts.

And then I was up!

Hesteggi doesn’t offer view towards the most dramatic mountains, but Hurrungane is of course a big exception.

Bleia is of course also dramatic – although in a different way.

I took a few more pictures, then headed back down.

Down in the forest, I wanted to take some more pictures of Sogndal, but I had to get the camera off the ground, and I needed to let the camera take its time. I hung my rucksack on a tree, hoping to balance the camera on the rucksack, hanging on a branch.

Then the branch snapped and my rucksack fell down, and tumbled towards the edge of the cliff I was on. I actually screamed “Noooooooooooooo” as my phone was in it.

Luckily, the rucksack stopped at the very edge of the cliff.

I had to come up with a better solution and found a thicker branch. Then I put my woollen gloves on it, which served as some sort of foundation. I was actually able to balance the camera on the branch and got the pictures I wanted.

I returned to Sogndal at the same time as Anne. We stopped for grocery shopping and enjoyed Taco evening!

Sunday: After the ice-skating safety class in Barsnesfjorden, I decided that another ski-trip to Tylderingen would be a nice end to a fantastic week in Sogndal.

The parking at Fretland was almost full when I got there and two cars left by the time I was ready to get going. As such, I expected to meet people on my way up.

The morning was a bit cloudy, but the weather was just great now. The temperature was nice and there was no wind.

The snow felt a bit softer and I really looked forward to the descent.

I found it surprising that I hadn’t seen any other skiers.

The snow wasn’t soft everywhere. As expected, the snow was quite hard on the upper mountain.

I was happy on top. This was exactly the end to a great week that I needed. And what a week it had been – 4500 vertical meters while being on an antibiotics course. Who knows what I could have been capable of if I had been feeling well 😉

This morning, I accidentally noticed that the camera setting for image size had changed from Large to Small. Aargh. That’s the reason why I haven’t been happy with the pictures lately. I just didn’t even think about checking it.

But now the setting was back to where it should be, and I could once again get a half-decent picture of Hurrungane.

I have to admit that skiing Blåfjellet would have been an even better ending to the week, but Anne had booked at table at the Vågal restaurant in Sogndal for 6pm. That would have given me a very tight deadline.

I enjoyed the descent. I found routes that either were “unspoiled” or had very few tracks. There wasn’t a whole lot of snow, but where there were no tracks, skiing was just awesome.

The best part. Beautiful snow.

Going home tomorrow. I wish I could stay longer, but a) I need to check on the house and b) Anne would go on a 4-day travel.
