Express boat, Onøy – Hestmona, June 28 2014

From Onøy, we got on the express boat in the afternoon, with Hestmona as destination.

Dogs are normally not admitted in the cabin, but this close to the door was OK

It’s not far from Onøy to Hestmona, but we got a bonus cruise today. First, the boat was going to Stokkvågen.

Træna in the horizon

We really enjoyed this form of travel

A true adventure on the Helgeland coastline

In Stokkvågen, I was able to get something from the car – which we left there on the 23rd of June. Can’t remember what it was. Anne bumped into a colleague and they had a good chat while I was away.

On our way to Stokkvågen. Aldra to the left.

After Stokkvågen, the boat went through Aldersundet, making a short stop at Aldra.

Aldertinden and Liatinden

Finally, we sat course for Hestmona.

Looking back on Liatinden

We were super-excited when Hestmannen came into view. That top sure looked steep! Would we get Karma up there?

Hestmannen comes into view

We left a grand view behind us…

Okstinden, Liatinden, Vasstinden, Aldertinden, Nonstinden, Ørnestinden, Hjarttinden

When we approached Hestmona, I figured it would take a miracle to get Karma to the top of Hestmannen.

Ouch…

The island has two namesHestmona and Storselsøy. There are also two harbors – one on the south side and one on the north side. We came in on the south side and Bjørn Eirik was waiting for us there.

Arriving on Hestmona

Bjørn Eirik told us that he a fantastic kayak trip from Onøy to Hestmona, and he had found a campsite by the harbor. He had also arranged so that we could get freshwater from a family (from Rana) that had a cabin nearby. Now, we could just settle in and look forward to the hike the next day.

Our hike up Hestmannen

The day had come. This morning, I would finally stand on top of Hestmannen (a dream for many years), with Anne and Bjørn Eirik by my side. And hopefully – Karma too. Time would tell…

On our way to Hestmannen

We followed the main road up to the nearest farm. We located the “Hestmann” trailhead, and followed the tractor road towards the Hestmonskardet pass.

On the right track!

Hestmannen has an impressive lower neighborAmbåtta. There wasn’t time to visit that mountain this time around, but I would like to be back!

Ambåtta seen from the road to the Hestmonskardet pass

When we got to the “Sæterveien” signpost, we followed the forest path.

Into the forest

The forest part didn’t last for long and soon we could see the installations just below the summit.

On our way to Hestmannen

A little bit later, we had the top in view. The very top didn’t look so intimidating as when seen from the boat. But I didn’t take anything for granted, with respect getting the dog to the top.

The upper part of Hestmannen

Ambåtta looked like a fantastic top!

The ropes were not needed today…

Maybe the ropes are useful when it’s icy…

The terrain was still OK. Maybe Karma would get lucky…

Bjørn Eirik was leading the way

What a view we were in for…

The coastline up north

Just below the top, it became a little complicated to safely steer the dog in the places we wanted her to be.

We can’t give up just yet…

But, we got Karma up! And on top, a friendly chap from Brønnøysund was chillin’ and enjoying the day.

On top of Hestmannen!

Big smiles, all around!

On top of Hestmannen

One more time – what a view!

View from Hestmannen

This journey with Bjørn Eirik started on Træna…

Træna

… and was supposed to come to an end after Hestmannen. But perhaps the view towards Rødøyløva inspired him and he decided to come along with us for one more top.

Rødøyløva

I loved where we had been, I loved where we were now, and I loved the places we were heading to.

A dream come to true

But it was time to get practical. Bjørn Eirik would spend more time on Hestmannen and then kayak to Rødøy. But how would we get there?

The guy from Brønnøysund said he would catch the express boat to Tonnes, leaving at 4pm – from the north side of the island. Anne and I quickly decided that we should get to Tonnes too and find a way to get to Rødøya from there.

Taking in the last views

The time was 11am. That gave us 5 hours to get down from the mountain, break camp and get to the north side of the island.

Looking down on our campsite

Back down, we had the nerve to ask the guy at the nearest cabin if he could drive us to the north side. He could! Big bonus!

Getting a lift to the north side

Another bonus was awaiting at the north side harbor. There was a ferry going almost directly to Rødøy! That meant we would get there ahead of Bjørn Eirik!

Things were going our way!

4:30pm, we could see the ferry approaching Storselsøy!

Ferry is coming!

20 minutes later, Hestmona/Storselsøy and Hestmannen were history, but never forgotten about!
