Our hike up and down Kvaløyfjellet

Wednesday: Today’s hike would be Ingebrigtvarden aka Kvaløyfjellet on Kvaløya island in Sømna. I did all 3 pf100 tops on the island back in 2008 and hadn’t been there since. As such, neither Anne nor Karma had been to this top before.

Hey Blondie – we’re not taking the bus and this is not a bus stop!

The route started by the local meeting house. We followed the main road for a few meters, then headed towards some houses where the forest path begins.

The path begins by the red barn

We headed up a lush and cool forest.

Up the forest

Another heatwave-day. The ascent was hard for Karma

Above the lower forest, the path was still easy to follow – marked with red paint on rocks.

The mountain plateau comes into view

It was yet another hot day – around 30 °C – and access to water for Karma and us had been carefully thought about.

Karma and Anne – one more thirsty than the other

Onto the mountain plateau

Karma soon got properly cooled down

Excellent!

Setting course for the top

A little bit later, Anne and Karma had a new top on their CV.

At the Kvaløyfjellet cairn

Well, hang on. When I got back home, I studied the map, and it turns out that peakbook.org is marking the wrong top as the high point. According to hoydedata.no, the point where the cairn is located is not higher than 303,5m. 118m to the south, near the radar, hoydedata.no is showing 304m as profile and 304,2m with text. With rounding, the top is 304m anyway, but if you’re very thorough about these things, then you have been warned.

View towards the radar

In any case, we do claim an ascent of this top and there were nice views all around!

Torghatten – visited 2 days later

The Brønnøy – Sømna coastline

It was time for the big reward – a swim in lake Langvatnet – a bit north of the summit. Karma found refreshments in the small ponds that weren’t deep enough for us.

Get back up! Too shallow for us

Eventually, we had Langvatnet ahead of us.

Langvatnet ahead

Swimming in Langvatnet was SO nice. The temperature was just insane. Karma had a whole lot of retrieving to do.

Didn’t know you were such a great swimmer!

We were all swimming back and forth. We could just not get enough of it.

One of the top memorable moments from this summer

But eventually, it was time to head back down.

We hated leaving this place…

We had a short detour before setting the course towards our ascent route.

Heading back down

After the hike, we stopped in the popular Kvennvika bay – also on Kvaløya island.

Kvennvika

The water was much colder here. But it got better once we got under.

Anne – going for a swim

It was then time to leave Kvaløya – for now. I hope we will be back some day.

Back at mom’s place, I had a couple of hours of spare time, and I decided to do a bike trip from mom’s place at Salhus, to the foot of Torghatten and back.

My bike trip

I didn’t have any perception of distance, other than that Torghatten (the mountain) looked really, really far away. I “stepped on the gas” and only stopped for a picture on the top of the bridge…

Brønnøysund seen from the bridge

…and one when I got to the foot of Torghatten.

Turning around

On my way to Torghatten, I had a feeling that I was biking against the wind all the time and looked forward to turning around. Then I realized that I hadn’t had headwind. Now – I had headwind. What a disappointment. But the 36,6km bike trip was nice, and I was back home in good time before the next activity.

A little bit later, we drove to Brønnøysund to see the “Texas” band (not from Texas) perform on the Roots festival. The festival has been around since 2001, but I have never been to any of the concerts. I never go to concerts unless Anne drags me along. I don’t like the acoustics. Too many sounds competing for my attention.

At the Roots festival

And I wouldn’t have attended the Texas concert either, if it hadn’t been for the fact that my 2,5 cousin Arne Flatmo played guitar. 2,5 means he’s not my 2nd or 3rd cousin, he’s my father’s 2nd cousin, but he’s closer to my age. I’ve known him all my life and the very least I could do was to watch him play.

Arne – to the left

The music was just fine, but again – the acoustics weren’t the best. I never understood a single word that the lead vocalist said. I hoped it would get better the next day, when we had paid tickets for the Halvdan Sivertsen concert.

Anne was in a good, festival mood

Go ahead. I am driving…

…and mom put up a brave face.

This is right up your alley, isn’t it? 😉

Also with us were our good friends Jorun (Arne’s sister) and Arnfinn, and after the concert, we went over to their place. It was very nice. Jorun’s one of my dearest friends, and I don’t have too many in that category…

Late evening with Jorun and Arnfinn

Back home, Karma finally noticed the neighbour dog – Storm – equally quiet as Karma. None of them uttered a single bark…

Karma, meet Storm…
