Our trip across Sausfjellet
Our trip across Sausfjellet

Tuesday: I had this plan about hiking Sausfjellet from Sausheia, then descend (off-trail) to Storsandvika and return to Saus. From there, I would have a bike and bike back up to Sausheia to get the car. At breakfast, I was able to sell this idea to Anne and mom.

Anne and I had been to Sausfjellet back in 2011. I only remembered that I had been there, but didn’t remember that Anne had joined in. Anne didn’t remember anything from that hike and Karma hadn’t been there. Mom had been on Sausfjellet several times, but never descended to Storsandvika.

The only problem was the extreme temperature. How would Karma cope with a 400 vertical meter climb with little access to water?

Well, we could do something. Like, pouring a 5-litre bottle of water on her before heading out, and hope that we would run into a creek here and there. If not, then I carried 1,5L of water and a bowl in my rucksack. Access to water on the mountain would not be a problem and so we took the chance.

I drove my car up to Sausheia and then we headed out.

It started out just fine. But it didn’t take long before Karma got thirsty.

At least, she was quite interested in what the forest had to offer

We found water for Karma and were able to soak her protective cover (horse flies and sunburn).

This will probably help her...

A bit unexpected, was the fact that Anne and mom got a bit dizzy and had to take a longer break, ¾ on our way up the mountain. Fortunately, they recovered.

When we reached the viewpoint cairn, we were all in a good shape and looked forward to reach the high point and then get wet!

Karma got to cool down one more time before reaching the top…

Eventually, we reached the top

Then we headed towards the biggest lake/pond we could find.

Oh yeah!

Oh, the temperature. What a delight.

In Norway, you typically only stay in the water for so long. And you’re pretty cold when you surface. This was altogether very different. We just didn’t want to get out of the water. But eventually, we just had to. We had places to go.

Like Storsandvika. We had no idea what terrain was awaiting (Granlia), but it started out quite easy.

Then, it got a bit more complicated.

Finally, we got to Storsandvika bay. I had some great memories of this place from my childhood. I kept telling myself that it probably wouldn’t live up to my expectations, and it didn’t. By all means, it was a nice bay. But it wasn’t the sandy paradise I pictured.

Already present were Unn-Helen (family), Ramona (her daughter-in-law) and Randi, and some kids. We had a nice chat before they went on fishing.

Naturally, Karma got to cool properly off before the final leg.

After a short stay (the horse flies were unbearable) we followed the tractor road towards Nordgarden on Saus.

When we got to Nordgarden, Unn-Helen was already back and served us ice-cream, cold drinks and coffee.

After a little while, Arne (her husband) arrived from hay harvest. And a little bit later – Andreas (their son).

I then took my bike (placed there before the hike) and biked up to Sausheia to get the car.

Once back in Brønnøysund, we enjoyed a nice dinner on mom’s terrace
