Continued from Poland trip, day 6…
Góra Dylewska (312m), Sep 26 2025
Friday: We left Grudizaz quite early in the morning. We were now heading for Gdańsk, but there would be time for one last P100 top – Góra Dylewska. This meant a 2-hour drive in the east (aka wrong) direction, just for a 1-minute hike. Crazy and fun!
Traffic was slow for the first hour. But eventually, driving was fun, and we enjoyed beautiful forests.
Eventually, we got to Góra Dylewska. We drove a cobblestone road almost to the top, without knowing if driving was permitted.
Then we walked up to the high point, properly marked!
There were also a lookout tower and no person around to claim entrance fee.
Góra Dylewska became our 10th P100 top on this short vacation. That was far more than I could even hope to dare for. True, half of them didn’t require a whole lot of effort. On the other hand, they were really far from Norway and getting there is an effort in its own right.

Gdańsk old town, Sep 26 2025
Friday: It was now time to head to Gdańsk. I wanted to return the rental car and check in at a hotel at the airport. Anne has gotten really good at on-line booking, but here, a phone call was required in order to get the price down to an acceptable price.
Anne guided me to the last petrol station before the airport and with a full tank, we returned the Hertz car. If we didn’t return it with a full tank, they would charge us 21 PLN for every litre they had to fill up. In my book, that’s overly expensive…
After leaving the car keys and the parking ticket (important!) at the Hertz office, the Hampton-by-Hilton was just a 5-minute walk down the street. I was a little annoyed that we had to go into the airport to drop the keys (having to wait in line first). Why weren’t there anyone in the parking lot to “sign us out” and take the keys?
Not too long after, we had checked into the Hampton-by-Hilton and relaxed a little bit before heading into the old town of Gdańsk.
We took a taxi to the old town of Gdańsk. We paid PLN 95 for the ride. Already at the entrance, I knew I wouldn’t really enjoy this.
But we started out by having a light dinner. The polish sausages and the mashed potatoes were just wonderful.
Then we continued our walk.
Anne wanted to visit the tower of St. Mary’s Church. There were more than 400 steps to the balcony open for the public. I am not a fan of churches, but I am a fan of vertical meters and hoped that this church was taller than 100 meters. Maybe I could create a list of P100 churches (internal joke)
It wasn’t 100 meters, but close enough. In any case, the views from the balcony were awesome.
We took a selfie. In retrospect, I can clearly see that I really didn’t want to be here.
Don’t get me wrong, though. Gdańsk is a stunning place in terms of architecture and history. The problem is that my heart is closer to the countryside and the mountains.
We went down and moved on.
One thing I can’t escape, is the mind-boggling architecture. I was just trying to imagine the daily life when all this was built.
Then we went on to see the Fountain of Neptune.
We continued down to the river Martwa Wisła. It was nice, but it was nicer in Grudziądz.
It was fun to see kids rowing, though. They were serious. They even had a tailing safety boat.
One thing I could have signed up for, was a cruise in the pirate ship down by the channel. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the time.
I was so happy when Anne mentioned that we could start thinking about wrapping this up.
But just before we were to exit the main gate, Anne wanted to sit down in a restaurant. We weren’t all that hungry and ordered one pizza for the both of us. I ordered a beer that looked really interesting – based on the picture on the menu, but it didn’t taste anything at all. Totally disappointing!
We went over to the taxis and took a taxi without checking the price. We just assumed it would be around the same price as earlier. When the guy dropped us off at the hotel, he wanted PLN 220,-. More than twice what we had payed earlier.
The guy didn’t speak a word English, so there was no point in having a civil discussion about it. Maybe it was more expensive in the evening. Maybe he charged more because he couldn’t get passengers upon return. Or maybe he just ripped us off. In any case, we were trying to get rid of our remaining złotys and in that respect, we succeeded.
We could have hung out in the hotel bar and gone to bed a little bit drunk. Instead, we went to bed 8pm, quite sober. The journey was over for my part. I had been in it all the way, but now I just wanted to get back home.
