Continued from Poland trip, day 5…
Krzyżna Góra (645m), Sokolik Duży (641m), Sep 25 2025
Thursday: After breakfast, we checked out of our hotel in Malá Úpa (in the Czech Republic, practically on the Polish border) and returned to Poland. Eric had recommended the Sokolik mountains and since we didn’t have any other plans, we decided to check it out. Based on the pictures he showed us, it looked really cool. Who doesn’t like granite rocks?
It didn’t take long to drive down to the town Karpniki. A few minutes later we found a road that would take us to the Schronisko Szwajcarka hut. We decided to not drive this partly rough road.
From the hut, we continued along a forest path. Suddenly, we were overtaken by a school class. They were going up to “the cross”, which is the Krzyżna Góra top and the southernmost of the two P100 tops here.
Anne had read on the internet that the staircase leading up to the north top (Sokolik Duży) was closed. We asked the school class teacher about this and she confirmed it was closed. That was a bummer. We really had been looking forward to the north top.
OK, at least we would visit Krzyżna Góra. We passed the school class at Husyckie Skały and continued up the mountain top.
The path to the top was big fun, carved out in the rock. I would be surprised if all of the children were OK to go up here.
And then we were up!
Such a cool place. I felt I could spend all day in this area, just scrambling until I faded out by lack of food and water.
While we missed out on views on Sněžka the day before, we got views today!
After a short stay, we went back down and continued on the path towards Sokolik Duży.
I found a rock that I figured I could scramble, but just when I thought I had reached the top, I was staring into an abyss with the top on the other side…
We parted with the class, preparing to go up “the cross”
And then we headed towards Sokolik Duży.
There are two tops up there – Sokolik Duży (the highest) and Sokolik Mały. Our interest was only the high point.
We were mentally prepared for the disappointment from the closed staircase ahead. But who knows, maybe it had miraculously opened again?
It hadn’t. It was closed.
In the end, it was just too tempting not to ignore the chain at the bottom of the staircase. It was clearly closed for safety reasons, but the only ones we would endanger would be ourselves. If the staircase collapsed with us on it, then we would probably be saving the life of the next person attempting to go up here.
Just to be on the safe side, we took turns going up. I went first.
It only took a minute to get up. I only stayed for a waypoint and a picture of part of the viewing platform before I headed back down. I realized that with my orange jacket, I would be visible to the class – probably on top of Krzyżna Góra by now. I was annoyed with myself for not taking the jacket off first.
I didn’t even think of looking over to Sokolik Mały, but I guess we see the top of it on the below picture.
Then Anne went up.
A couple of minutes later, we were just two tourists looking towards this super-cool granite-chunk of rock.
If I get an an angry email from the Polish authorities, I will definitely reply and say we’re sorry…
We returned to Husyckie Skały – located between the top mountain tops. Here we found a “rock “high point” that we could scramble without risking other injuries than hurting pride (if we couldn’t get up)
This was a very nice start of the day. But now what?
We had to come up with a plan and decided to start driving towards Gdańsk, finding a place to spend the night along the way.

Góra Zamkowa z wieżą Klimek, Sep 25 2025
Thursday: After a 460km drive from Karpniki to Grudziądz, We decided to check into hotel Ibis in Grudziądz. It was impossible for us to remember the name, let along how to say it in a way that sounded remotely Polish.
This was a reasonably big town, but Google normally gets you where you need to go. I tried to think back on the days when Google Maps didn’t exist. We got to our destinations then also, but it was much more cumbersome.
Anne looked forward to see the Wisła river – the longest river in Poland (1047km). I am sure this has been – and is – a very important river also. Read all about it on Google…
The best way to view the river would to be go up to the castle hill (Góra Zamkowa) and head to the top of the Klimek tower.
Like always, I enjoyed every vertical meter…
And then we got what we came for!
We also got a nice town view for free.
The Klimek tower is approx. 88m (give or take) and my only focus was the prominence of the castle hill. Yes, I am a damaged soul. I wish the interest in history would supersede the nerd stuff.
Back in Norway I found that the prominence of Góra Zamkowa is only ~11m, which I found very surprising and disappointing. There is higher terrain close by (to the north) and the saddle is the parking lot from where we tried to access the hill, but the gate was closed…
But our bellies were rumbling and it was soon time for dinner.
Klimek was cool. No doubt about that. The height is approx. 23m.
We headed down in a different direction and enjoyed the park.
The entire Poland trip had been going very well for us. We had every reason to be happy.
Finally – dinner. We decided to eat at the hotel, which means that we would get “hotel food” and not the wholesome, generous meals we had been getting in the countryside. But it was OK. We were hungry.
