Monday: Still in Brønnøysund, and at noon, I decided to flex for the rest of the day and work in mom’s garden. Finally, I could get going with my new brush cutter, which a friend of mine purchased in Mosjøen. The battery is interchangeable with my chainsaw.
The brush cutter was doing a great job until I needed more line. It wouldn’t feed properly, so I opened the spool and pulled out some extra line. Apparently, I didn’t lock it back in place very well. The moment I fired it up, the spool and the cover launched into orbit, and the trimmer line was instantly chopped into tiny one-centimeter fragments. At that point, my only option was to drive to the store and buy a new spool of line.
When I was done with the cutting, I took the battery from the Stihl brush cutter and put it into my chainsaw, to get rid of some roots.
In the end, the part of the garden that was overgrown, ended up looking quite neat, but we had quite a bit of garden waste to haul off to the local recycling centre.
Afterwards, I did a little more office work and then I was up for a hike. Today’s destination would be Trælneshatten – which I also hiked in January, when I was up here the last time.
Back then, I hiked up and down from Trælnes. Today, I left my bike at Kvervet and the plan was to hike across the mountain and bike back to Trælnes.
Summer had arrived on the Helgeland coastline and so had the warning about lightning. Yr.no said “Ongoing lightning” but the lightning map didn’t show any occurrences on Helgeland. I checked with CoPilot what to look out for and the primary advice was “Cauliflower clouds”
Oh well. Let’s see what happens. So, with that in mind, I headed out from the Trælnes trailhead.
I paid close attention to the clouds. I could see that something was going on further to the east, but I could not hear any thunder.
I thought I knew what I needed to know in terms of what to do if lightning and thunder suddenly came upon me. Like, hide under a rock or a tree and don’t carry metal objects in the backpack. The first was just wrong (don’t be part of any structure) and the second is a myth.
I’d worry about that if I heard thunder. Meanwhile, I would just enjoy the hike.
The temperature was maybe 18 °C and I was sweating like crazy. I was a bit tired after hours of garden work, but even if the hill was harder than normal, I still enjoyed the hike a lot.
Finally, the “Oh no!” hill came into view. I gave this name to this hill in January, when I thought that I had reached the top.
Due to snow, I wasn’t able to follow the main path in January, but today, I had no problems.
What a nice day, such a nice mountain and what a view (if you like endless ocean)
A few minutes later, I could see the summit cairn.
And then I was on top – for the third time in my life.
The weather was supposed to be like this all week. So, I figured I would stay out the week. There’s nothing that attracts me to my house on Sunnmøre. It’s just where I live, because I’m too lazy to move. And, then there’s the thing about showing up at work from time to time. I think they’ve given up on me. I’ll probably be working from home until I retire.
With great freedom comes great responsibility. I don’t take this privilege lightly. I am far, far more productive from home than at work. And I think my boss knows.
I do like it up here. But do I want to move here? My mom is 81 and she might well decide to be 100 years old, still live at home, still go hiking. I will inherit her house, but when? The future is uncertain and interesting. I have no idea where I’ll be growing old. And I don’t care.
It was time for the descent. I hadn’t heard any thunder og lightning yet, but a word of wisdom is “quit while you’re ahead”. And so I sat course for Kvervet.
I had never done this route before, but I really liked it. That is – I liked going down this way. I don’t think I would have liked to go up this way.
The ridge was fun, but …
… the terrain in the forest was wet and boggy.
On the upside, the threatening cloud had disappeared, and the weather seemed quite stabile.
I continued down the forest, just following the forest path…
… and eventually, I found the tractor road…
Finally, I ended up where I had left my bike.
The bike-trip back to the Trælnes trailhead was very enjoyable!
