Our route to Sollia
Our route to Sollia

Saturday: We didn’t have a whole lot of snow on Gurskøya island, but Anne and I still decided to ski from Leikongeidet to Sollia – the island high point. We certainly hoped that there would be more snow higher on the mountain.

Hmmm....
Hmmm….

The ascent up to “Skaret” was not fun – especially when we realized that we would have to come down this way. Below the thin layer of snow was pure ice – or no snow at all.

It was a challenging start...

But at “Skaret”, the conditions improved.

And we didn’t have to break trail either…

Everyone was happy today!

Karma was so eager that she didn’t have time to wait for us…

Hey, dog!!!
Hey, dog!!!

On the first plateau, a guy dressed in green came our way. We both knew who that was…

Our buddy Bjørn Skoge says he likes to dress in a way that makes it easy for the rescue squad to find him. Good thinking, if you ask me.

We took a picture of him, he took a picture of us, we chatted some and then we moved on in different directions.

It was about time, as Karma was getting a bit impatient

After a while, we got Sollia in view.

What a glorious afternoon…

Beautiful...

And then there was only one hill left…

It was good to reach the top, although it was a bit windy up there.

We wouldn’t be staying for long, but first – the treats for the dog, the pictures for me and the visitor register for Anne.

On our way down, Anne displayed old skills. I was a bit stiffer on skis that are no good a) on the tracks and b) off the tracks, but excellent if your trip involves BOTH on and off the tracks.

Then, the fog came in…

This trip was just GREAT from the beginning to the end. Well, it was GREAT except for the beginning and the end…

Karma was our big hero today. The snow wasn’t easy for her, but she gives her very best in following mommy and daddy.

Fortunately, we quickly got out of the fog.

Back at “Skaret” we now had to embrace for a terrible descent back to Leikongeidet. But that’s the price one has to be willing to pay for such a great trip…
