Sunday: It felt like the wind would tear the house apart and I quickly lost interest in any outdoor activities along the coastline. I decided to drive to Volda and hope for less wind there. The plan was to ski Skarphornet although I was a bit hesitant to expose the dog to the wind at that altitude. But without precipitation, it *should* be OK.
I normally park down by the golf course but today I drove all the way up to the “Private road” signpost and parked there.
There was timber harvesting work in this forest, which seriously affected the snow quality on the forest road to Botnasætra.
Then it got better…
And then it got worse again…
But higher up, the road was OK and I looked forward to ski down here. The snow barely carried Karma’s weight, but that was only because we were following a snowmobile track. It would get more cumbersome on the mountain.
This route offers water refill…
We had a fairly easy ascent to Botnasætra and the track went all the way to the start of Skarphornet’s north ridge.
From here on, Karma just had to fight her way up.
It got slightly easier on her when we reached the high ridge.
It was quite windy, but it wasn’t a problem.
I tried both sides of the ridge, but there wasn’t shelter from the wind anywhere.
I was wondering if I should have gone to Melshornet instead. Better snow for Karma, but we had been there twice this year. It’s more fun to vary…
Eventually we reached the windy summit.
It was impossible to pack the skins in the manner they should, so they were just a big ball in the backpack.
Then we followed our tracks down from Skarphornet.
Going down was much harder for Karma, given the weight applied to the soft surface. But she was a hero today also and kept on running. And daddy enjoyed the skiing…
Trip statistics: 9,5km, 695 vertical meters, 2h:18m
