Sunday: The day had come! Finally, I would be going to Romhesten – a top I had been wanting to do for many years.
I had imagined Anne and I would be kayaking from Jordal, across Fjærlandsfjorden, and then hike Romhesten from Lidal.
But this plan required logistics and someone looking after Karma. Time just went by. Then, a while back, Anne got the opportunity to do this trip – with Sogndal Turlag – and they got a boat ride. So, now she had been there, and I figured I might as well hike this mountain from Grindsdalen. It would be a longer hike, but not THAT long.
Anne would look after Karma, and off I went to Grindsdalen. I was happy about being able to drive all the way up to 600m elevation.
I was somewhat annoyed that the remaining 1,4km to Stavsete was closed for the public. But after a while, the road was damaged by a small landslide and no cars could pass anyway…
There was fog in the mountains, and I planned to orientate myself based on the power lines. But the map didn’t match the terrain. I was really confused. On the map, the power lines were on my right-hand side, but in the real world, they were on my left.
I chatted with a woman in the nearest cabin, and she told me that the power lines had been relocated and that the maps probably didn’t reflect that. In any case, she said I would pick up a trail if I just headed up the valley.
I did pick up a path, but in places it disappeared under the snow. It was ok though. The direction was obvious and the snow carried my weight.
For a long time, I could enjoy the nice view up towards Stav.
My first goal was to reach the watershed at 1020m.
Then, most of the vertical gain was lost and I dropped down to 720m.
Along the way, I had to make a LONG detour (kidding) due to this little, very angry fellow.
After a little while, Romhesten came into view. That was a “big” moment. So far, I hadn’t even seen the mountain. My planned ascent route up the east ridge looked easy enough.
When I reached the river from Ryssebotn, I had to search actively for a place to cross and stay dry. Whatever aid used to be here, isn’t working anymore…
Finally – I could focus of the *main* ascent of Romhesten.
I would not mind coming back here and turn right for Gunvordalsbreen glacier…
The fog also seemed to be lifting.
And then I reached the top – some 15 years after becoming aware of it…
First, I enjoyed the views from the main top…
But there was another viewpoint – a bit further north. Postcard material!
I was content. It was time to head back home…
I descended to 720m, crossed the river in the same place and then ascended back up to 1020m before I was back in the main valley – taking me back to Stavsete.
I will definitely come back here for more hiking. That’s for sure!
My legs were a little bit tired when I returned to Stavsete.
Still, I was super-happy about having done this hike!
And a little bit later, I was back at the car…
Back in Sogndal, I continued with my chores…
