Friday: At breakfast at Saga Trollheimen Hotel in Rindal, Anne got a visit from her SNO colleague Lars Olav. He knows his way in and out of Trollheimen, if we ever need some good intel there…
After checking out, the plan was to end our common vacation today, and drive all the way back to Ytre Søre Sunnmøre. But we had to do a hike, of course, and I had proposed Honnstadknyken above Surnadal.
I was not completely new to the Surnadal area. I had been to a handful of tops, including Strengen – the prominent neighbour to the west.
We found the Skeisnebba toll road (NOK 90, – at the time) which took us all the way to a parking at 400m elevation. It seemed that we could drive even higher, but there wasn’t really any point in that.
From the parking, we followed a marked path up to the same road, which we immediately crossed and got onto the mountain path. Very nice!
After a little while, Honnstadknyken came into view. It seemed we had a good hike ahead of us!
After crossing a meadow, we were on our way up to the ridge that would take us all the way to the top.
Along the ridge, we cross Svarafjellet (780m, w/40m prominence).
After Svarafjellet, we descended a little (40m) before we started the final climb to the top.
The forecast had a solid promise of rain in the afternoon, and we hoped that we would be down before then.
With a prominence of 549m, Honnstadknyken offers some good views. We looked very much forward to reach the top!
At 12:40, we reached the summit cairn!
We both enjoyed this top. Nice trail, nice top and nice views!
To the north, we could see almost all of Surnadalen valley.
To the south, we had a good view towards Trollheimen, Sunndal and Romsdal mountains.
Awesome mountains, all around!
Considering the weather forecast, we didn’t stick around…
We followed the same route down as we came up.
The 3,5-hour hike was a perfect way to end our peakbagging this summer.
Anne likes ferries. I don’t. So we had to find a middle way for our route home. I didn’t want to drive to Molde, and so we agreed to take the Kvanne – Rykkjem ferry – which none of us had taken before (at least as we could remember) and drive home via Sunndalsøra, Eikesdalsvatnet and Åndalsnes. We still had to take the Sulesund – Hareid ferry, but 2 ferries is a better deal than 3!
Once on the Sunndalsøra side, the heavens opened up and it was pouring down. We decided to go for an easy dinner today, as we would be getting home late. We stopped in Sunndalsøra and enjoyed a couple of pizzas from the local gas station before taking on the long drive home.
This concludes the summer vacation for Anne, Karma and me. We got LOTS of good memories for the photo album. Big hugs and kisses to both my girls…
I had still a couple of good hikes ahead of me before starting up work again.
