Saturday: Anne had gone back to Sogndal, and I had to figure out what to do with the rest of the day. I had been thinking about revisiting Litle-Eidskyrkja for a while, a top which Karma hadn’t been to. So that kind of became the decisive factor and I headed for Volda and Skinnviksætra.
I had been to Skinnviksætra twice so far this year. First, when I skied Eidskyrkja in May and secondly, when Karma and I hiked Middagshornet in June. This would surely be the last trip up here this year.
The weather was so-and-so. Rain showers came and went, and this wasn’t the ideal mountain to hike on slippery rock! But that couldn’t helped now that we had arrived at the trailhead.
And off we went…
We avoided the rain until we were close to the little pond below the mountain. It wasn’t raining a lot, but enough to get us properly wet.
It was strange not hiking with Anne, after spending 3 weeks with her. Too bad she was homesick. I’m sure she would have loved this hike!
Rain that is coming and going sometimes leaves a nice rainbow…
The rain shower passed, and we were ready for ascending the upper part of the mountain.
We were able to follow grass quite high in the direction of the Tårnet – Litle-Eidskyrkja pass, but we had to deal with a boulder field that was slippery as soap by now.
And then there was Tårnet – “the Tower”. Most likely the most difficult top in Volda. I was up there in 2010 and remembered that it was slightly tricky, but I had forgotten the details. I think it’s soon time for a revisit.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. We had fog too. But it helped a lot that the fog wasn’t thick as smoke, as some route finding is needed, especially if you are bringing a dog.
I had been up here before also (when I visited Tårnet), but I didn’t remember any details. I definitely didn’t remember it to be tricky, and it wasn’t either. Karma had no problems following me.
The clue was to bypass parts of the ridge crest on the left-hand side.
And then we were up! Congrats to Karma with a new top!
I didn’t remember if I visited the satellite top the last time I was here (which I did), so I went over there while Karma waited on top. Some (very easy) scrambling was needed to get over there.
Too bad about the fog. Litle-Eidskyrkja offers some good views towards Austefjorden and the mountains beyond.
After a short stay, we headed back the way we came.
When Tårnet finally came out the fog, I remembered my ascent route – to the right of the ridge leading up. There was one point I found a tad gnarly. But I didn’t check out the left side, like curving around on the back side. Something to come back for!
The descent from the pass was truly slippery and cumbersome, but eventually we were back on grass and could enjoy another rainbow!
Except for a couple of rain showers, the weather was overall OK. But when I was driving home, the heavens opened up. We’re talking skyfall! I was so happy that I wasn’t on the mountain then…
