Kongsvollen (683m), Oct 6 2025
Monday: The weather was OK during my working day, but just as I logged off, it started to rain. The doorstep was incredibly high this afternoon, but I managed to get across it.
The easy thing would have been to just hike Huldrehornet (271m) or some other low top. But then I would begin the week with vertical meter “debt”. I didn’t want that.
So, I drove up Ringstaddalen, seeking inspiration. It was also tempting to just hike Garnestua from Løset, but that route wouldn’t give me the 500 vertical meters I wanted. I did absolutely not want to hike Kongsvollen, as the meadow between the trailhead and the ridge is so incredibly boring.
For reasons I cannot explain, I ended up with going to Kongsvollen.
I took the bike along the cabin road and left it where the trail across the meadow begins. I didn’t count that as biking.
Then I decided to head straight for the ridge, avoiding going in the wrong direction, but then it would be off-trail. Cocky as I was, I assumed it would be fine.
But it wasn’t fine. It was a nightmare.
Finally, I reached the ridge and promised myself that I would follow the path on my way down.
I now looked forward to “Bukketrappa”. Some find it steep and scary, but I think it’s just fun.
There are two routes in the uppermost (and steepest) section. I followed the one in the mountainside on my way up and I would be following the ridge on my way down.
It only took me 57 minutes to get up. “Only” in this context means compared to the time it normally takes me when following the path – which includes a “detour” in the wrong direction.
It was quite windy up there. But it was way, way windier this weekend (the storm “Amy”)
I filed this hike under “character building”. It was a win to get across the doorstep, but it was an even bigger win to get all the way up here.
I looked forward to getting back down and this time, I followed the path…
Trip statistics: 7,9km, 590 vertical meters, 1h:53m
Veten on Hidsegga (556m), Oct 7 2025
Tuesday: It was raining all day, but I barely noticed. Yesterday and today was one of the most intense working days I can remember. I managed to do a week’s work in two days and was quite happy afterwards.
So, it was a super-bonus that it had stopped raining when I logged off. I immediately decided to pay Hidsegga a visit. I hadn’t been there since February…
It would be along the steep and scenic route from Hidsneset. I hadn’t done that route in at least 3 years.
I used to go up here long before someone marked the path, but I used to do a steeper route than the one’s that marked today.
The lower part is quite steep, and it was very slippery after the rain. Fortunately, the grass is strong and good to hold on to.
When I got up to the ridge, the wind was cold. I had to get a proper jacket on.
I do like this area. I should have explored more of the couloirs. Maybe someday…
And the light was just awesome…
Eventually, I reached the top. What a cairn!
I took a couple of pictures before I moved on. Even with a jacket, the wind was quite cold.
Prior to heading out, I had left my bike at the head of the Hidsdalen road. It had to be a round-trip hike, of course and the walk along the main road is boring.
What an afternoon…
I felt so grateful about getting this nice break from the rain.
I picked up my bike and was back at Hidsneset a few minutes later.
Just when I got back home, it started raining again…

Sneldelida (633m), Oct 8 2025
Wednesday: Another day with rain. At times, so hard that it became a topic in one of our Teams meetings. A colleague claimed he had to turn up the speaker volume because of the rain…
After work, rain showers replaced the constant rain, leaving fantastic light between the showers. I decided to drive to Flø and bike up Midtflødalen and hike Sneldelida.
The road up Midtflødalen is long, but I was able to find a gear (on the bike) that was just perfect for this hill. Part of the way, an eagle kept me company…
The 4,1km (350+) vertical meters to the top of the road took 35 minutes (incl. stops for pictures).
The plan was to bike to the end of the road but then I discovered a Sneldelida signpost that I had forgotten about. To my surprise, I could keep on biking – for another 440 meters. I was now basically at the foot of the upper mountain.
Then it started to rain, but as I only had 1,3km to the top, I didn’t care much about it.
And as soon as I reached the top, I sensed that the rain shower was moving away.
It was still raining, but the wonderful light dominated more and more of the horizon.
I took an off-trail shortcut back to the bike.
Back at the bike (at 420m), I got a double rainbow as a reward for my efforts!
I was back at the car 10 minutes after returning to my bike. This was great. It didn’t feel strenuous at all, and this is a route I will definitely repeat. I’ll even bring my bike all the way to the top. Already looking forward to it!
On my way home, I stopped by the beach for one last picture.
Trip statistics: 2,3km on foot, 9,1km on bike, 550 vertical meters, 1h:26m
Hasundhornet (533m), Skarpeidet, Oct 9 2025
Thursday: It’s hard to describe today’s weather, other than horrendously bad! Rain and hail showers from the morning. The forecast said it would rain less between 4 and 6pm, but at 4:30, it was still pouring down.
I decided to trust the forecast and drove to the pass between Hareid and Ulsteinvik (Eidet) and bike Hasundhornet from there.
It had stopped raining, and I had an OK trip up to the road across Fjelle. But it was windy!
When I got started on the steep hill to Hasundhornet, it started raining again. But either I didn’t notice or I didn’t care. I had enough with managing to bike up in the strong wind.
But I got up and looked immensely forward to the trip down. But first, a couple of pictures. And then it stopped raining.
4,9km and 9 minutes after leaving the top, I was down on the main road. But I wasn’t quite done yet. To get some additional meters, I biked up to Skarpeidet.
I had gotten the vertical meters wrong and thought I hadn’t accomplished 500 vertical meters today, but I had actually done 640 when I returned to the car. Bonus!
And then it started to rain again…
Trip statistics: 17,8km on bike, 640 vertical meters, 1h:35m
To Sogndal, Oct 10 2025
Friday: For the past days, I’ve felt “something” in my chest. It reminded me strongly about the Costochondritis I had 5 years ago. They just give you pain killers for it, but I thought I would check with the Doctor’s office before going to Sogndal.
They wanted me to come in, and they did ECG (probably mandatory for man/woman 60+ complaining about chest pain) and several other tests. As suspected – with no particular findings, they told me to take Ibuprofen and see how it went.
I took one and began my journey to Sogndal. I am not sure if I reacted to the medicine or if I just got worse, because I soon felt totally rotten. Earlier in the day, I was in the mood for a hike if the rain would let up, but now that was totally out of the question.
I am sure the weather helped on the decision. The windshield wipers were on automatic and were going at FULL speed.
I was quite tired when I arrived in Sogndal, but now I could relax. I was quite curious about how I would be feeling the next day.
