Continued from Poland trip, day 2…
Monday: In the morning, I decided that I was OK to drive all the way from Słupsk to Jelenia Góra – more than 600km. I was also OK with the fact that there would not be time for any hiking.
It took a while before we got onto the motorway, but once on it, I relaxed. 120km/h was just the right speed for me. German-made cars (I don’t have to mention brands) came rocketing past us, probably going 150-160km/h (or more).
But then Anne mentioned the two lops tops east of the motorway. Maybe there was an opportunity there?
The most interesting one was outside Zielona Góra, but this was a fairly large city and so we decided to go for Bukowiec – southeast of Miedzyrzecz – instead.
Anne did a great job in getting us to the trailhead, like she always does. This was quite a remote area, and people were staring our way.
We continue though the village Wielowies and turned left onto a not-so-good road towards Długoszynek (not signposted). This was a small village with 5-6 houses, with a nice “ecological footprint”, based on their gardens.
As we didn’t understand the (many) signposts and warning signs, we stopped by a house. The couple living there didn’t speak English, but they had a son inside the house, who did.
We explained our business, and it was all good. We were not trespassing and there was no longer any military activity. We parked in the outskirts of the village and proceeded on foot.
There were a myriad of forest paths and trails and since there was no cell phone coverage, my old Garmin GPS came in handy. The GPS had a Polish map and all the Poland P100 tops stored as waypoints. Surely, we would find the top.
After leaving the main forest road(s), we followed a trail that was clearly leading to the top, but took a shortcut.
As the trail/road curved around a ridge, we did the final leg off-trail.
To our pleasant surprise, this was not an anonymous forest top. People actually do visit this place. There was a bench and a visitor register with a stamp!
The views were so-and-so…
After pictures and registration, we returned the way we came.
Then we sat course for Jelenia Góra and Hotel Bella – in the outskirts of town. They didn’t speak English, which was OK. We were used to that by now. Then we asked about dinner – in English – and they said “8“. We asked if it opened or closed at 8pm? The receptionist said “open”. We double-checked. “The restaurant opens at 8pm?” The receptionist said “yes”
At 8pm, we were outside the restaurant, quite hungry. A guy showed up, saying “closed, now”.
Fortunately, the hotel across the street (Cieplice) had an open restaurant and very nice food!
Again, we were in bed before 22pm. This road trip takes its toll!
