Wednesday: The morning after New Year’s Eve started early by shoveling snow (in Sogndal). Then I spent some time packing the car while Anne made breakfast.
After breakfast, I started on my homeward journey. The weather was awesome. It was ridiculous to spend it driving, but I just wanted to enjoy driving in daylight. I could always take Karma for a walk after dark.
I had all the time in the world and stopped every now and then for pictures.
How lucky am I to “commute” between Sogn and Sunnmøre…
As I was approaching Volda, I decided to start the new year with a ski trip to Melshornet. I assumed that the track up the mountain would be hard, and that Karma wouldn’t have a problem with the amount of snow.
It was a beautiful afternoon. It was almost too bad that it would be dark by the time we got to the top.
But darkness has its flavors too!
Even with a good track, Karma wasn’t enthusiastic. Maybe a bit of car sickness?
After a while, she sat down and was clearly in distress. I tried to interpret the signs and found a split of wood under her suit. Once I got that removed, the problem was solved and now she took the lead.
Red turned into purple…
As we took on the final hillside, other skiers had turned on their headlamps. I find it easier to ski with a headlamp than without, when the light isn’t too good.
And then we reached the top. Karma checked out the place for treats that I tossed around, while I prepared for the descent.
We were definitely not alone up here.
Karma took it nice and easy down the mountain, just as I hoped she would. The snow wasn’t totally firm and every now and then she broke through. She understood the risk and adjusted the pace accordingly. I enjoyed myself making long turns in the nice snow, trying to stick to her pace. The only risk was that there was no sole. Lots of fresh snow on top of the ground. Can be treacherous…
I was quite happy with the start of the 2025 season, and it only got better when I got closer to home.
As I was closing in on my driveway, I didn’t look forward to spending an hour shoveling snow and to my delight, I saw that a friend of mine had stopped by with his ATV and plowed my driveway.
Trip statistics: 7,3km, 555m vertical meters, 1h:43m
