Røddalshorn (563m), Apr 12 2021

1st of 3 trips (3 days in a row) to Røddalshorn

What a combination – fresh snow and a period of good weather. That doesn’t happen often here on the coastline. So, the important thing is to make the most of it. Suck the bone marrow…

So, on Monday afternoon, we headed up to Røddalshorn. The weather was not glorious, but the snow was nice – at least in the lower part. On top, it was very, very windy. But the week forecast was pure gold! Might as well get started…

Day 2 on Røddalshorn was better than day 1!

Back on Røddalshorn, for the 2nd day in a row. Sometimes, words are superfluous. Better let the pictures speak for themselves. In any case, the weather wasn’t good when we headed out. But it got better. Much better!

Oh, this is just getting better by the day…

Back on Røddalshorn for the 3rd day in a row. There’s not really any point in trying to say something meaningful. Other than frickin’ awesome!!!!

Storetua (592m), Apr 15 2021

On top of Storetua

Although very tempting, I found that 4 trips to Røddalshorn in 4 days was a bit … excessive? So, I decided to continue on the neighbor top Storetua instead. The skiing route is not as good as on Røddalshorn, but variation is nice.

We skied from Vassverket at Holtane and tried to find a route that only provided downhill skiing from the top. Which isn’t easy, as the 0,7km summit ridge is more or less flat with a number of small humps and bumps. The variation was better than the descent!

Sollia (661m), Apr 16 2021

Karma on top of Sollia

Sollia is the highest top on Gurskøy island, and is very a popular ski-trip from Leikongeidet. Primarily by those who ski on wax. I’m not big on wax and so I don’t fully enjoy the two uphills the descent route has to offer. But, still it’s nice to visit this top every now and then.

The best route is clearly from Tjørvåg. Downhill all the way to sea level. The only problem is that there is almost never snow below 100m elev. And, I really like to ski all the way back to the car!

Vardane / Sulafjellet (776m), Apr 17 2021

On our way up Sulafjellet

Anne came up on Friday and joined Karma and me for a wonderful ski-trip to Vardane on Sulafjellet on Saturday. We took the normal route – up the tractor road to Rollonhytta and then straight up to the top.

The descent from the top is nice, of course. But NOTHING like skiing down the curvy tractor road. The only downside is that there are always lots of people on a day like this, and the majority doesn’t appreciate someone coming down in full speed.

I always try to not make other people uncomfortable through my actions. But on this day, in this weather and on this snow – I was more than willing to make an exception….

Sunndalsnipa (1396m), Apr 18 2021

Sunndalsnipa

I had hoped to get Anne to join me on a trip to Sunndalsnipa, but she wanted to spend this wonderful day on the coastline and offered to take Karma so that I could get an … uninterrupted … ski-descent.

The parking lot in Grøndalen was more than full, but I found a pocket further down the road. As such, I had a different approach to the mountain than the rest. Which was cumbersome, but eventually I was on the tracks leading to the top.

This mountain is very popular thanks to the high (400m) and south-facing trailhead. Which means a lot of sunshine, even in the afternoon. I don’t mind lots of people. I could even have brought Karma (which we’ve done a couple of times) and it would not be a hassle.

The descent was wonderful, of course. There’s no other way of putting it. But, also very nice was to join Anne and Karma again – for yet another dinner outdoors!
