We had camped by lake Vassvatnet (near Aldersundet) and got ready to hike Store Strandtinden – located on the Lurøy/Rødøy/Rana border. This used to be the highest peak in Rana, but after later changes of municipalities, Store Strandtinden is now “only” the high point of Lurøy.

Having access to a car again (after a week without it) made traveling easier. We broke camp and drove to Geir Vatne’s farm and checked the local information board.

The path led us initially through cultivated land before passing the gate that marked open land from there on.

The landscape was gorgeous. In center were the Aldra mountains, and we had visited the highest – Hjarttinden – the day before.

Liatinden was a gorgeous mountain. But because of Karma, this mountain would simply have to wait…

After a while, the goal for the day came into view…

When we got to lake nedre Kvannskardvatnet, we decided to pass it on the north side but took a short break first.

We just couldn’t believe how lucky we were, in terms of the weather!

Taking the north side route meant that we would have to cross the river.

We passed lake øvre Kvannskardvatnet on the south side.

We had left the lakes behind us and started to focus on the final ascent.

Karma was still a couple of months from turning two years old, but didn’t have any problems with the terrain or the vertical meters.

Before we could get to the boulder, we had to cross some snow.

Little by little, we rose above anything else in the nearby area…

3 hours and 15 minutes after leaving the car, we were on top of Store Strandtinden!

Back then, Karma hadn’t learned to face the photographer when pictures were taken…

Good gracious, the views!

Hundreds of mountains, as far as the eye could see!

And we could see all of the mountains we had been to, so far on our Helgeland journey!

And there we so many more mountains I wanted to visit…

It was time to head back down. Our journey along the Helgeland coastline was far from over…

We saw something down on the snow. Surely not rocks, but it wasn’t moving either…

Reindeer?

Then I accidentally stepped on Karma’s foot, she screamed and now the “something” was moving…

Yup - reindeer!

The snowfields made part of the descent through the boulder area much easier!

Since we were on snow, we could have some fun with it…

Down by lake øvre Kvannskardvatnet, it was time to cool down. But first, I had to make some room

Anne wasn’t too keen on swimming with ice all around and found herself a comfortable place in a creek…

6h:52m after heading out, we returned to the car. We would now be heading northbound, towards Meløy, Gildeskål and Bodø. Our stay in the Lurøy – Rødøy region had been wonderful and we hoped that more adventures were waiting further north.
