To Åmøyhamn, July 2 2014

After the nice hike up and Store Strandtinden, we moved on up north – towards Meløy.

First, we had to take the Kilboghamn – Jektvik ferry. We feared this would be a pure nightmare, given infamous ferry queues that can build up in summer, along the Helgeland coastline. But, today it wasn’t bad at all and we had an enjoyable trip on the ferry.

The next ferry went from Ågskardet to Forøy. We had some time to kill here…

This ferry trip wasn’t half bad either…

Then we could set course for Åmøya

We knew where to hike Risnestinden from, but we didn’t know where we would be camping for the night…

We drove all the way to Åmøyhamn before we found an OK place to camp.

It wasn’t a very nice campsite, but it was flat and no one was around.

We woke up at Åmøyhamn to a beautiful morning

It was a busy morning. First, we noticed that someone seemed to be living in the shed which we camped by. Through the window, we could see a bed and a table, but no one was there.

Then came the southbound coastal express

And then came the northbound coastal express. We got cheated out of some great pictures when the two ships passed behind an islet.

They sounded the horns and woke up every living creature for miles around…

After breakfast, we broke camp and drove to Bogneset where the mountain path begins.

We followed a nice path, across slabs where possible.

The route was easy to follow and since we were in no rush, we could take breaks and enjoy the views. Unfortunately, it was cloudy – a major shift from the weather we’ve had so far. Was this an intermediate or permanent change?

Then we moved on

Nice path!

We sure looked forward to reaching the top. We hadn’t heard about Åmøya before, but as we’re (also) collecting island tops with a prominence > 100m, and especially tops with a prominence > 600m, we just had to come here…

Skarstinden (641m) was never on our radar…

Further away, we could see familiar tops that we had visited earlier on our Helgeland journey…

And then the Åmøya high point was “in the bag”…

Bolga was unfortunately one of the islands we missed out on, on this trip.

Eventually – time to move on!

We found a rock that we just couldn’t pass…

While climbing it is by no means a great feat, it’s stuff we have to do to keep age at a distance

We were back at the car 3h:09m after leaving it. I asked Anne permission to do a quick hike to Storvarden on Grønnøya. She was more than happy to chill with a book. I decided to let Karma rest.

I turned left after the bridge, drove 650m to a barn and parked there. Then I followed a sandy tractor road until I came to open land.

Eventually, I found a path leading to the top, but not without some full-on bushwhack involved…

Finally, I got to the top and another island top was “in the bag”…

I had a good view towards Risnestinden from here…

23 minutes after leaving, I was back with Anne. The question was now where to camp? It had begun raining the idea of having a soaking wet tent in the car the day after wasn’t so tempting. In the end, we decided to check into a hotel. Ørnes was fully booked (some theatre festival), but we were able to book a room in Glomfjord.

It was a true delight to wash my hair again (hadn’t done that in 10 days) and eat at a restaurant again.
