Rambjøra (132m), Nov 27 2023

Our route across Rambjøra
Our route across Rambjøra

Monday: The shape was still rotten. Got an appointment for ultrasound in the evening and there were no malicious findings. But hearing the Doctor list up all the places that looked cancer-free was very uplifting and so I found the energy to do a walk across Rambjøra in the evening.

It was a truly beautiful evening.

On top, I felt like extending the hike via Dragsund and Jonseholmen.

I cursed myself for not bringing the Canon camera on this walk…

Gyrinakken (365m), Nov 28 2023

Our route up and down Gyrinakken

Tuesday: Lo and behold, I felt better and for the first time in more than a week, I looked forward to the afternoon walk with the dog. This afternoon, I wanted to go to Gyrinakken on my island Gurskøy.

On the way to the trailhead, I had to stop several times to photograph the beautiful sky

Those skies...

I parked by the Vonheim school, and the forest road was insanely icy

The forest tractor road was even worse. How would I be able to get up on a mountain on this kind of ice? Well, time would show. I was clearly not giving up already.

As we entered the forest path, the ice got weaker the higher we ascended. I could not remember experiencing conditions like this before. Normally, it’s the mountain that is icy, not the forest.

And so we reached the top – on beautiful snow.

We caught the last light before it disappeared in the horizon.

Seeing the lit trail at Leikongeidet, I decided to take a different route down. We went to the lit trail and then followed the vague forest path (again – icy!) to Feirelia and returned to the school along roads.

Wednesday: I was clearly on a rising curve and decided to do an afternoon hike to Røddalshorn.

The icy conditions from yesterday were found today also. But today, I had spikes under my boots.

The goal was to reach the top before the headlamp had to come on.

We got a little help from the moon

Just like yesterday, the snow got better the higher we got.

The moon is normally a yellow ball at this hour, but I played around with shutter speed and some basic Lightroom work afterwards, and I managed to get something else than just a yellow ball.

And then we sat course for the top.

It was good to be back here, and …

Then we headed back to the car.

Afterwards, I decided to do a round in the lit trail. The trail was ridiculously icy.

I had a solid grip with my spikes. Karma was sliding back and forth.

Borgundgavlen (71m), Nov 30 2023

Our hike across Borgundgavlen
Our hike across Borgundgavlen

Thursday: Ålesund day, and the main goal was to bring Karma to the Vet 3 times during the day for blood samples. In a few days the Vet would give us a verdict on if Karma had the Cushing Syndrome or not.

1 down, 2 to go...
1 down, 2 to go…

We started 8:30am, the next visit was 12:30pm and the last visit would be 4:30pm. I had then time to do a short walk across Borgundgavlen with Karma before the final visit.

This is a hike I enjoy, and it’s a hike I did for a whole month after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism back in 2008. I couldn’t get out of bed for 3 days (quite an awakening…) and for a month, Borgundgavlen was Mt. Everest for me.

I had calculated that we would just have enough daylight to do a round trip hike.

The only problem was that I was wearing sneakers, and the trail was really icy in parts.

Still, we got around without falling and got some good views along the way.

Eventually, we returned to the car and sat course for the Vet’s office for the 3rd and final blood sample of the day.

Djupvikhaugen (98m), Dec 1 2023

Our hike up and down Djupvikhaugen
Our hike up and down Djupvikhaugen

Friday: Anne arrived and brought another snowfall along with her. Once she arrived, we agreed to walk the dog across Djupvikhaugen – a short walk from my house.

This is a very popular hike, but no one (!) had broken the trail this afternoon.

OK, let's break the trail...
OK, let’s break the trail…

A modest layer of snow on top of pure ice – quite challenging if you don’t have spikes. It didn’t take long before Anne took her first fall. Then it became a contest…

Ooops - try again...

After another fall from Anne, we reached the top without further accidents…

We had a nice view towards Myrvåg from here.

I asked Anne to come along for a round trip hike, and she shook her head and said “of course” … But she also knew that chances were that the rest of the hike (through the forest) would be easier (less slippery) – and it was!

Once back at lake Djupvikvatnet we had another contest – who could slide the longest on ice. I won this contest too (of course) …
