Continued from summer vacation, day 12…
Fykanbergan, Glomfjord, Jul 25 2025
Friday: Karma was still not being herself, but she didn’t give us many clues. She ate grass and vomited, but that was certainly not a new situation for her. As we thought she had burnt her eyes, we drove to Ørnes to buy saltwater eye drops, on recommendation from my local veterinarian office.
I also called the regional veterinarian and asked if he could take a look at her, but he was far away and asked us to make an appointment for the next day if there was an emergency.
There was no emergency as such, just a dog that acted differently than normal. We hoped that she would get better.
As we were so close to Glomfjord, Anne wanted to visit Fykanberget and see “Spylerennene”.
We parked just before the Svartisen tunnel, and the site was nearby. Karma refused to walk, so we let her stay in the car.
The grooves were quite spectacular!
I asked ChatGPT to give me a summary, and here is what it said;
The spylerennene at Fykanberget are natural glacial erosional features, formed during the deglaciation at the end of the last Ice Age, more than 10,000 years ago.
They were etched into the hard granite bedrock by pressurized meltwater flows beneath the ice sheet, which carried abrasive sediments (sand and gravel).
The speed and force of the meltwater—along with its sediment load—created deep grooves in mere hours or minutes during rapid melt events.
Just the thought of all this happening in hours or minutes is mind-boggling.
We walked around a little bit, before returning to the car.
Horntinden (454m), Skrovtinden (463m), Ørskroven (415m), Jul 25 2025
Back at the rented house at Finnes, Karma still didn’t give us any clues. She went to her bed, which we had put in a dark place in the hallway. Then she alternated between sleeping and shifting positions.
Anne and I decided to go for a hike, in the nearby region. We would be gone for a few hours, but Karma looked calm and stable.
We then drove to Øra / Øysund for a round-trip hike across Horntinden, Skrovtinden and Ørskroven. All tops in the 415 – 463m range. Not too hard. There was parking at the Øysund farm and then we followed the farm road.
After 1,2km, we left the farm road and turned right (“Botnen”) as the map showed a trail here. We followed a tractor road 100 meters, then we started to follow the outskirts of a cultivated field and look for the path.
We didn’t find any path and so we just decided to head off-trail up the valley. After a few minutes, we found the forest path. We don’t know where it began.
We followed the path up to the high ridge and sat course for Horntinden.
We met some tourists out hiking, at the foothills of Horntinden. They had seemingly come up from the south side. We nodded. They went in the opposite direction, we continued towards Horntinden.
The ridge route was fun and easy.
I felt a little bad about leaving Karma back at the house, but the way she had been for the past months (surgeries and spondylosis), she would just have to get used to the new, easier life.
Then top #1 on this round-trip hike was in the bag!
It was foggy, and the wind was picking up a bit, but it was still very warm. No “coolcation” just yet…
We were just happy that we were below the fog. Kunna’s top was in the fog.
After a short stay, we descended from Horntinden.
On our way up Forsheia, we met the same hikers again, coming down. They thought we were going back up the mountain one more time and were curious. We told them we had come up from the other side, and then it made sense for them.
Our next goal was Skrovtinden – the highest top on this ridge.
The top of Horntinden was now in the fog. This probably meant that we wouldn’t be seeing much from Skrovtinden…
I was right…
We were now setting the course for Ørskroven (or “Skroven” as it is called on the maps). I was totally disorientated and if Anne hadn’t been there, I would have to use my phone GPS to figure out the direction.
We quickly got below the fog and were happy about being on our way to the last top. The route looked cool!
The path between Skrovtinden and Ørskroven wasn’t very well maintained, but at least it was marked!
The path was also visible enough to follow. There was one more top – Medtinden – we had to cross before reaching Ørskroven. But Medtinden only has a prominence of 50m and doesn’t really “count” …
This was fun terrain. We enjoyed this hike.
It was clear that this hike would be slightly longer and take more time than we had thought. But now that we had come this far, we would see it through. Karma would probably be sleeping anyway.
Then we sat course for Ørskroven – the final top.
All tops were now in the bag. Anne was happy and I was happy!
We only had one full day left at Finnes, so if we were to hike Kunna, that had to be the following day. I had hoped that we could get Karma up there, especially since she “seemed to want to go there”, back in 2014.
But given her current condition, chances were good that Anne and I would have to hike Kunna without her.
But now we wanted to get back home to her. We followed a visible path from the pass between Medtinden and Ørskroven.
This route got a little boring down in the forest…
Then it helped to keep an eye out for the flora and fauna…
Karma had the same, strange behaviour when we got back home. But there was nothing that indicated an emergency. As she seemed relaxed enough in the dark corner of the hallway, I decided to sleep in the chair in the living room, so she wouldn’t be alone down there.
We could only hope that she was feeling better in the morning.
Trip statistics: 12,6km, 980 vertical meters, 3h:45m
