Tuesday: Anne left in the morning, and I was left to my own devices. One of these devices is to hike a rather sharp mountain ridge. Already at lunch, my mind was set on doing the Saudehornet traverse – from the northwest top to the east top.
I brought my bike. I reckoned it would be just wonderful to bike down from road end in Vikeskåla (522m) and down to the trailhead (142m).
But then it was a matter of getting up with the bike. Man, it was so hard. I lasted 0,4km and then I simply had to get off the bike and push it. I started to wonder if I really was saving any time by bringing the bike…
Eventually, I reached road end in Vikeskåla and could get ready for a hard hike up the mountain.
I followed a path up to the point where it got steep, then it was just off-trail from there. I stuck to the boulder, which gave me an easier ride than the grass. But the hill felt endless.
Finally, I reached the northwest top (1289m) and could enjoy a wonderful panorama towards the Ørsta peaks west of Saudehornet.
I had done the route between these tops a few times before, but always coming from the main top.
The first part of the route was easy enough. I could choose between climbing the sharp ridge or follow an easier grassy route below.
There’s no good reason to not climb the sharp ridge. You’ll miss out on so much fun!
The Ptarmigans were busy, leading me their way. But on a ridge this narrow, their ways are few…
The hardest point of the route is where you have to choose between a short knife-edge pitch, or bypassing it in the side facing the glacier.
I had to pass a short pitch of snow, but fortunately, it wasn’t steep and there were no problems related to the crossing.
Finally, I had the main top ahead of me. The last part is just easy scrambling.
And then I was up!
Coming up, was a guy I met when I left the bike. He hiked from Vikeskåla over to the normal route. I don’t know anything about his shape and form, so it wasn’t any measure on which route was the fastest. He told me this was the main goal for the summer. I congratulated him.
I followed the normal route down.
I descended to the red cabin, crossed back to Vikeskåla and was so happy when I got to the bike. The steep hill down to the trailhead is always a nightmare for my feet. Now, I could just cruise down.
Karma went totally bonkers when I got home, almost 4 hours later.
Trip statistics: 5,7km on foot, 3,7km on bike, 1230 vertical meters, 2h:43m
