Blåtind (697m) + biking, Jul 1 2025
Tuesday: So, what happened to Monday? Nothing much. I was not well, was barely able to complete my working day and hiking felt like the last thing I wanted to do.
I was still a bit under the weather Tuesday morning but felt better in the afternoon. It was time to give Karma a decent hike again. I was betting everything on that all her unwillingness to hike was a result of mood, stiffness and age. I still don’t know how painful it is for her, but for the life of me – if she is in true pain – it must somehow show???
I drove to Havåg to hike Blåtind, and I wanted to park as close to the trail as possible, avoiding boring her to death by walking on asphalt. Then I discovered there was a parking area I didn’t know about, with a path connecting to the forest trail. As such, Karma didn’t know where she was and walked willingly.
When we got onto the forest trail, she “collapsed” a little and looked 100 years old.
Then, the forest miracle occurred again. A deer had been using the path and Karma didn’t have time to wait for me…
She was cruising up the forest.
Above the forest, the scent was no longer to be found, and I could see the enthusiasm gradually vanishing.
But then she picked up another scent and was all over the place again.
I was very happy when we reached the top. Karma – back on Blåtind! I don’t take these hikes for given anymore.
It was a short, but nice stay.
I could see that she was not happy with taking the same route down, and she fell in behind me. OK, let’s go off-trail, I said and suddenly she was ahead of me. She’s so predictable.

When we joined the trail by Grøthornet, she stopped and kept looking at me. It could mean so many things, and I didn’t have a clue about any of them. So, I just kept on walking, knowing she would come running up behind me.
OK, just in case she really doesn’t want to go down the same way, I decided to descend along the Eiksund trail. Oh, what a popular choice!
The only problem was that this route was quite overgrown in the forest, and it was difficult to see where I was placing my feet. Karma did not have that problem, but it was a bit annoying to hardly see her at all…
All in all, a good hike.
After dinner, I was feeling quite good – and a little restless. As I didn’t do any hiking the day before, I still had 500 vertical meters to catch up on. However, as the Blåtind hike gave me 700, I just needed 300 to be on target. I decided to go for a bike trip up to Leikongeidet.
It was a really nice trip. At Leikongeidet – on top of the new (albeit short) trail they have developed this summer; I had a whole lot of nice downhill to look forward to.
It was tempting to also bike up to Djupvikhaugen, and I had to “say words to myself” to not go completely nuts on this biking. It was almost 11pm and I should try to get some sleep soon.
Blåtind: 8,5km, 700 vertical meters, 2h:26m
Leikongeidet: 19,7km on bike, 365 vertical meters, 1h:07m

Wednesday: I was having yet another bad day. Not as bad as Monday, but I was so fatigued. Moreover, I was dizzy. Every time I got up, I got a mental picture of Fred Astaire, side-stepping. I did some mental exercises to check if my head worked. I passed.
I was just dizzy when walking. I was drifting to the right. I had to drive to the store to buy bread. Not a problem. I maneuvered nicely between a bunch of garbage bins that had been placed alongside the road for pick-up.
After work, I just had to lie down for an hour. I was totally out of it and couldn’t see how I could cope with the rest of the afternoon, let alone the daily exercise. The last 15 minutes of my rest was solely devoted to producing energy to get across the doorstep.
I decided to drive to Haddal to bike Hasundhornet. It’s 500 (+) vertical meters climb across 9,5km. Gentle, until the trailhead at 330m. The final 200 vertical meters to the top is just plain murder.
But I got up. What’s good about this silly thing to do when the body doesn’t really want to, is that it actually feels better. I was feeling quite alright.
The downhill was a blast. Very, very enjoyable!
Back home, I took Karma and drove to the Djupvikhaugen trailhead. She seemed happy enough and was leading up to the hill, while I was biking behind her.
It’s a short route to the top, but we would take the road back home instead of going back into the car. She seemed very old on the way back home. She’s not totally in love with the gravel road along lake Djupvikvatnet.
Once Karma was back in the house, I took the bike to get the car. I was quite happy being in motion, as it would delay the “return of reality” which surely was awaiting. And sure enough – it didn’t take long before the fatigue was back. I was less dizzy, though. That must count for something…
Hasundhornet: 18,8km on bike, 530 vertical meters, 1h:18m
Djupvikhaugen: 5,5km on bike, 135 vertical meters, 0h:49m
Leinehornet (364m) + biking, Jul 3 2025
Thursday: Again, not a very good day, without knowing what caused it. Fatigue was the key word and I had to rest a little bit after work. That helped and then I took Karma and drove to Leinøya to hike Leinehornet.
We parked down in Leine and Karma had no intention of going anywhere. I had to pull rank on her and off she went.
Once in the forest, she got a bit more interested. But she was clearly warm and walked slowly. Access to water every now and then helped a lot.
Eventually, we got up and Karma could go on a “scattered treats” hunt while I was taking my pictures.
This hike would only give me ~340 vertical meters and so I started to ponder on how I could return home with 500 without going on another hike or bike trip.
I decided to do some additional biking in Leine, staying close to Karma. The sun was shining, but it wasn’t all that hot in the car. She would be OK.
We descended along a different route, parallel to our ascent route, and ended up in someone’s backyard. That “someone” was sitting on a bench. “Sorry”, I said. “No problem”, the other person replied.
I left Karma in the car and took the bike up to the uppermost house – approx. 90m elevation. Then I went back down and biked to the south entrance to the – old road? Then I went back up to the uppermost house before biking some more down by the fjord.
It took 30 minutes and then I was “fine”, with respect to the daily exercise.
Trip statistics: 7,1km on bike, 3,8km on foot, 550 vertical meters, 1h:46m
Djupvikhaugen (98m), Jul 3 2025
Thursday: In the evening, Anne came up to Sogndal. After “checking in”, she wanted an evening walk. We chose to take a walk across Djupvikhaugen.
Karma wasn’t willing at all and stopped. We just kept on walking, she followed, only to stop again. After 3-4 stops, she realized that we wouldn’t be siding with her, and she gave up protesting.
Such sacrifices call for rewards, of course…
Now that we were here, it would be more fun to do the round-trip hike. Even Karma agreed.
It was a very nice evening…
Trip statistics: 2,4km, 95m vertical meters, 0h:44m
Skolma (636m), Jul 5 2025
Saturday: No hiking on Friday. I went to Ålesund early morning so that Karma would get her shots of Librela and Cytopoint today. In the evening, we were invited for dinner with good friends and although there was probably an hour where I could gone hiking, I didn’t feel for it.
But on Saturday, we would go hiking for sure. We decided to hike Skolma from Flø. It’s a beautiful route.
We passed the “Hoksteinen” rock early on. It’s “important” to climb this rock every now and then, just to stay familiar with the handholds.
We avoided a bunch of cows by not confronting them on their path. The guy following behind us didn’t, and was quite busy getting the cows to fan out…
It was a hot day and Karma sounded like an old diesel engine in desperate need for maintenance. Luckily, there are a couple of streams coming down from lake Ytrefløvatnet.
Then we took on the ridge route, leading towards the top.
Both my girls were warm and tired when we reached the top.
Good job by Karma. This was her second 600m top this week. I think we’ll try to keep it at that level for now.
Meanwhile, better enjoy the time we have together…
We took an off-trail route down to lake Skinnalidvatnet. I had never been down here before.
Here, we discovered a cool stone hut.
This was fun. I like stone huts like this.
We then followed a path that I didn’t know about. It seemed to promise to lead us down to lake Ytrefløvatnet.
It did, and we all enjoyed the birch forest.
Down by the lake, Karma got to cool off one more time. I had to toss treats into the water to enable her retriever mode.
Overall, a great hike.
And the cloud cap on Runde island was just phenomenal.
