Wow – I’m still pretty fast (for an old guy)…

Tuesday: I didn’t do any hiking yesterday. Quite unusual, but it was raining all afternoon, and I lacked motivation. Moreover, I think I needed the rest.

As such, I had surplus energy this afternoon and decided to hike Saudehornet. The forecast indicated rain in the afternoon, but I decided to take my chances and drove to Ørsta.

I decided to “just” go up and down the normal route – from the water building (140m). The 1,1km gravel road was boring as always, but eventually I got on the forest path.

I felt that the hiking was going well. I kept a steady pace that I knew I could hold all the way and didn’t try to push beyond that.

I felt raindrops every now and then and hoped that I would reach the top before the rain sat in. That was good motivation for keeping up the pace.

I met two other blokes, coming down the mountain. Besides the 3 of us, I didn’t see anyone else on the mountain.

It was nice as always to reach the 1000m point. Only 300 steep vertical meters to go, and they never feel like 300 meters to me. I did the 300 meters in 19 minutes and then I was up! The whole ascent took 1h:14m (1150 vertical meters). I was quite pleased about that!

The views were nice as always!

I walked down to the west ridge, to get a closer look.

I really want to scramble/climb this ridge, but it’s exposed, steep and slippery. I can’t really see myself just scrambling that ridge without a rope. We’ll see. I’m not really a lead climber.

After a few minutes, I began my descent. It still wasn’t raining and it looked like the weather would be holding up.

I was a bit surprised about the elapsed time2h:06. But if subtract the detour to the west ridge, plus the two minutes I wasted trying to get my jacket on, in the strong wind – it would be 2 hours sharp. It’s been a while since I did this mountain in 2 hours. I thought completing a hike this fast was a thing of the past. It made me quite happy!

I’ll be 62 by the end of the year. Maybe I should set myself a goal to be able to match that time when I’m 65
