My biking route to Årheimsfjellet
My biking route to Årheimsfjellet

Sunday: After hiking Krosshø, I still had appetite for more activity. So, I decided to take my bike up to Årheimsfjellet above Stryn and Loen. I expected that there would be a non-bikeable part above Oppheimssætra, but I could always push the bike up and down there.

I drove up to the Holme trailhead above Oppheim, where the parking fee (NOK 85, –) is a tad stiff for a hike.

I started out by biking the road to Hoven. I enjoyed the asphalt but not so much the steeper sections.

After 4,3km, I left the Hoven road and biked to the trail junction just above Oppheimssætra.

From here, I pushed the bike all the way up to the high ridge. I realized that I would also be pushing it down.

It was hard work but got a welcomed break when I started talking to two hikers coming up behind me.

I was very happy when I got up on the ridge. The gravel path was like a motorway for bikes.

Oh yeah!
Oh yeah!

The only obstacles were the drainage ditches along the trail, often reinforced with crosswise stones to keep the water from overflowing, and these stones can be tricky to ride over on a bike.

But it was overall good fun. I really looked forward to the ride down, except the part between the high ridge and Oppheimssætra.

If it hadn’t been for the ditches and a few odd steps here and there, I would have been able to bike all the way to the top…

I enjoyed myself a lot and promised myself that the next time – I would bike to Hoven, across Skredfjellet, up to Årheimsfjellet and go down the same way I would go today.

And then I was up…

On my way down, I passed a couple who strongly advised me to be careful. I assured them that I’m too old to risk injuries. Recovery time takes forever at my age.

Back at the car, I was torn between returning to Sogndal and get something to eat – and hike Orkja (948m) in Jølster. I had already 1775 vertical meters so far today, and 1580m the day before, so it wasn’t so that I desperately needed the vertical meters.

But I felt quite fine, and it wouldn’t have been a problem to add 500 more vertical meters to the activity log. But in the end, I was quite hungry and looked forward to a quiet evening with pizza and a few beers, while Anne was still on her Sognefjellshytta – Hjelle/Årdal hike with her friends.

Trip statistics: 15km on bike, 775 vertical meters, 2h:17m
