Continued from summer vacation, day 17…
Wednesday: It was a slow and nice morning, at mom’s place in Brønnøysund. We slept until we couldn’t sleep anymore – which was around 7:30am. After breakfast, I got to catch up on some PC work, as well as helping mom in trimming the hedge.
Around 1:30pm, we sat course for Velfjord. We were invited to good friends at 6pm and planned to do some hiking first. The goal was Kvennhatten – a mountain that my father didn’t survive, back in 2003.
After recovering from several brain strokes, he went on a mountain hike to Kvennhatten that he shouldn’t have. He called my mother from the top – very happy. On his way down, he suffered from a heart attack. After calling around, family members went up, found him and got him to a hospital. But he never woke up from the coma. As such, Kvennhatten is a special mountain to me.
Anne had not been to this mountain before and didn’t like the start of the hike. The tractor road was not exciting; it was raining and there was thick fog on the mountain. I couldn’t blame her.
Once we got on the forest ridge, it got a bit better. The forest was nice, but not so the horse flies.
As we got higher, we started to get hopes about the fog going away.
I’ve been to this mountain a couple of times, but not since 2005, two years after my dad passed away. It was special now also, since it was only 4 days since our beloved Karma passed away.
I was glad Anne wanted to join in on this hike. Now she knows a little more about my history from the north.
When we reached the top, we were above the fog, and it had stopped raining. It was very nice. We both had brand new shoes (La Sportiva Ultra Raptor II GTX, but our shoes were soaking wet. It was a bit disappointing, but it said something about the wet grass today.
Our stay on top was short. The amount of horse flies was less than down in the forest, but they were still present.
We hiked the same route down.
Then we drove to Vassbotn to take a bath.
A week had passed since we last were here, but the temperature in the water hadn’t changed much. Maybe a tad colder, but it was super-warm a week ago. It was really nice.
We had some time to kill before visiting our friends at Saus, so we drove to Lande (by the Tosen fjord). I hadn’t been there in 40 years (at least) and Anne had never been there. The only person we saw, was down by the pier, fishing. We went over to him and started to chat. It turned out that he went to school with my auntie (Lillian) in Mo I Rana. It’s a small world indeed.
After a while, we drove to Saus to visit our friends Jorun and Arnfinn. Jorun serves the best waffles on the planet (I’m not kidding) and we had a few nice hours there before returning to my mom’s place in Brønnøysund.
Trip statistics: 6,2km, 595 vertical meters, 2h:02m
