Melshornet (668m), Jun 9 2025
Monday: Today, I would try to trick Karma to come along to Melshornet. I decided to start by the shooting range in Hjørungdalen – close to the normal trailhead at Ulset, but far enough away for her to recognize the location. I had never hiked from the shooting range before.
At first, she was just staring at me. I told her to get going. If she still didn’t want to hike when we reached the forest, we would turn around and I would take the bike for a ride.
But something happened. The path must have smelled like Chanel no. 5 at a single’s party, because she was huffin’ and puffin’ like a wild hog. I was like – in her way!
This went extremely well, and Karma was leading on up the forest. All of a sudden, we were surrounded by chicken, clearly forest birds but I am not sure which one. Probably black grouse. Karma was confused and her instinct told her to kill something, but which one? Fortunately, I was right there and could make the decision for her. No killing today!
Eventually, we reached the trail from Ulset and Karma looked like an inflated balloon at a Children’s party. There was no air left. She now realized where we were and where we were going. That was certainly not her plan, but she came reluctantly along.
Above the forest, we got some rain. Not close to the massive showers we had earlier in the day. I really hoped those showers were long gone.
Karma’s “mojo” was rising a little as we were approaching the top. She clearly knows the difference between uphill and downhill.
I was so delighted to be escape the rain showers. It was really nice being up there.
But the showers were lurking nearby so our stay on top was short. Karma was clearly happy to take on the downhill but wasn’t so happy about taking the same route down.
Down in the forest, I took a different path that I had forgotten about. She liked that and took the lead.
It was a good start to a busy week.
Trip statistics: 8km, 580 vertical meters, 1h:59m
Bike trip, Avsølevegen – Dalavegen, Jun 10 2025
Tuesday: After my working day, I packed the car and went for a road trip lasting almost a week. My first stop was Sogndal.
Once there, I felt a strong need for a bike trip and decided to follow Avsølevegen up to the crossing of RV5.
I really enjoy biking these days. It’s no longer just a way to reduce the strain on my bad knee. I actually like it.
I biked the old road – Dalavegen – down to Sogndal. I had a good speed down the valley, but I didn’t break 50km/h. Close, but not quite.
It was nice to do the Fjordstien route before climbing back up to Anne’s place.
Trip statistics: 16,4km on bike, 430 vertical meters, 1h:03m

Slakkafjellet (855m), Jun 15 2025
Sunday: Spending half the night in a chair did wonders on my neck, and free of headache, I drove down to Sogndalsfjøra to walk the dog, early Sunday morning.
After breakfast, I decided to see if I could get away with a bike trip across Skardsbøfjellet, without too much rain. Karma would be fine in Anne’s apartment and 09:07am, I was on my way.
I hadn’t gotten very far up Øvstedalen valley, when the first rain shower came upon me.
I was quite wet when the shower had passed, and for some reason, I hadn’t brought an extra jacket. I was wearing quite thin clothes but assumed I would survive.
This hill is quite a climb – in local scale. 700 vertical meters (+) across 10km uphill.
When I got to the top of the mountain service road, it wasn’t raining and so I decided to do a quick hike up to Slakkafjellet.
I was very happy about this last-minute decision, because Slakkafjellet wasn’t on my mind when I decided to go on the bike trip.
Now I could look forward to an 8,3km nice descent…
If I could just avoid the rain, that would be another bonus…
But just as I began my hike down the forest, another rain shower came along.
Fortunately, the rain stopped when I got back to the bike. The descent was OK, but the windchill factor (speed + wet clothes) was … notable.
A few hours later, Anne returned from Jostedalen. We had a few hours before going to Solvorn for Storm’s 18-year birthday.
Trip statistics: 2,7km on foot, 26,3km on bike, 950 vertical meters, 2h:33m
Solvorn, Jun 15 2025
Sunday: Our good friends in Solvorn had invited us to celebrate Storm’s 18-year birthday.
It wasn’t easy to tell how the weather would turn out, but we didn’t even get started on the food before we had to rush in.
A proper rain shower swept across Solvorn…
It was nice to be inside as well…
We went back to Sogndal late evening but decided to take Karma for an evening walk, around Campus.
The rain was long gone…
Every time we pass a climbing wall, we have to give it a try, only to conclude that those years where we accomplished anything, are long gone…
