Our route through Torghatten and mine - across the mountain
Our route through Torghatten and mine – across the mountain

Friday: The morning started out like many other mornings this summer – Anne going for a swim. This time I joined her. Just for the walk, not the swim. Karma got a swim too, of course.

A visit to Torghatten is always a mandatory activity, when visiting Brønnøysund. In the past years, we have taken mom on hikes across the mountain top and then through the legendary hole. But it would be different this year. The plan was primarily just to hike through the hole.

We were quite lucky to find parking. This is a very popular area in summer.

We were not quite sure if it was OK to take Karma on this hike, but we had brought water and would take it easy. And the ascent was just a little more than 100 vertical meters.

We stopped by a pothole that I didn’t know about.

The Sherpas have done a good job here, although I don’t know if Karma loved all the steps.

After a little while, the hole came into view.

Minutes later, we were at the hole.

This hole is indeed unique. No wonder why it’s so popular.

When I am here, I am always reminded of the tragic airplane accident in 1988, when a Widerøe Dash 7 crashed into the mountain and 36 people lost their lives.

It serves as a reminder to make every day count. No one knows what tomorrow brings…

We then continued down to Ytre Hatten.

It was then decided that I would hike across the mountain, while Anne and Karma chilled down by the bay. After the hot hike, the dog needed some cooling…

Mom hung out with them for a little while and then went back home.

Then I headed for the mountain

I hadn’t walked very far before I heard dogs barking. Apparently, a guy on bike was letting his dog run loose on the beach. Karma didn’t like that her new estate was invaded and went into guard dog mode. I wish I was down there. I would have told the guy what I felt about people not keeping their dogs under control.

The situation seemed to quickly de-escalate, and I continued upwards.

I like the rocky route, and I always find new routes to scramble.

To my surprise, there were few people on the mountain.

Last year, Karma did this traverse without any difficulties. It was sad to know that that wasn’t the case anymore. Even with a normal temperature, I would not have brought her along.

There were however 3 guys on the top, taking pictures. I just took a couple of pictures before leaving, but I asked them if they were going across? “No”, they said. They were in a hurry and would take the same route down.

I was sort of in a hurry myself, eager to get back to Anne and Karma and moved on.

The Torghatten traverse is so much fun. It can get as steep as you want it. But the visible path is fairly easy. You may have to use your hands in places, but it’s quite doable for people who are used to mountain hiking.

When I returned to the bay, I met the 3 other guys. So now they know that going across doesn’t necessarily take much longer time…

The tide was coming and Anne said he had moved the chair and parasol (that I got from the car before I went up the mountain) 3 times.

The time in the water with Karma was quality time.
