Our hike across Leinebjørnen and Leinehornet
Our hike across Leinebjørnen and Leinehornet

Sunday: Earlier in the day, we had yet another failed attempt on Lidaveten (592m) in Volda. That mountain is truly Mt. Everest for Karma this year. No worries, though. We’ll get to the top again, sooner or later.

After this snow struggle, Karma had earned a nice and easy walk and I decided to hike Leinebjørnen on Leinøya island. We were on Leinehornet earlier in the week and the plan was to do the hike across both tops then, but there was just too much snow.

But after days of snowmelt, I reckoned that there would be opportunities for a round trip hike today. We headed out from Nærøya and sat course for Leinebjørnen’s west ridge.

Ready?
Ready?

There were no snow issues here. Just an icy path with a thin layer of snow.

The current snow shower was fading and Leinehornet came into view. I was pretty sure that we would be standing up there later. The weather wasn’t bad, just snow showers.

It seemed like Karma was happy about the change to a very moderate snow depth…

This is better, right?

It was fascinating to watch the snow showers at sea, lining up to hit us…

It didn’t take us long to reach Leinebjørnen.

And now I really looked forward to the hike to Leinehornet.

Then, another snow shower came along.

After a while, the shower passed, and we caught up with Idar and had a nice chat. He knew these coastal tops like the back of his hand and it’s always nice to talk to people who have great passion for their local mountains.

Looking towards the ocean, another shower was building up. I would prefer if it came right now, so that we could have a view from Leinehornet, but now it seemed to turn out the opposite way.

We still had a bit to go, and so I understood that our stay on top would be short and not so pleasant.

Prepare for another shower!

But I would rather choose this weather over sunshine and blue sky. At least, this time of the year. I think the change in weather is just beautiful.

I might as well start the countdown. Within 60 seconds, another shower would hit us.

And sure enough. Our stay on Leinehornet was short and not so pleasant.

It was a bit windy, and so we just headed straight down on the south side. Due to low visibility, I realized I wasn’t quite sure where we were, other than that we were definitely not on any path. But as the shower faded away, visibility got better and we got back on track.

When we reached Leine, the weather was honky dory OK again.

We had a nice stroll back to the car at Nærøya, enjoying the amount of red that had now blended into the clouds.

It was just a very, very nice end to this hike.

Grateful for the chance to choose between hiking on the coastline or skiing on the mainland

We had been “at it” for quite few hours now (Lidaveten included) and now I looked forward to getting home and enjoy a nice and warm shower (not snow). Karma was probably looking forward to curl up for a good nap.
